So the funniest facebook comment on the rapture was "Of course the world wouldn't end before The Oprah Show.... Duh! " but since it seems that Oprah Winfrey controls the world I have faith that I will reach my 40th birthday in November.
I didn't read the article so I might be way off but he predicted the Rapture would happen last Saturday. If it was going to happen everyone that was left behind would suffer here until October when the world really would end. So, I'm sure he thinks that not a single soul was saved my God and now we are all here to suffer until October.
this is the part that burns me up so much right here: "I was doing what I've been instructed to do through the Bible" (direct quote from Camping.)
We are not allowed to just take certain parts of the Bible and disregard others!!!!!! I wish I could slap a Bible down in front of this man's face and show him Matthew, Acts, and all the other scriptures that say we "are not to know the date and time of such events", that only God knows! GRRRR!
I'm angry. But I am sure that God is trying to work through this man for a higher purpose. I just don't know what it is.
The part that makes me so upset is all of the generalizations and criticism that "Christians" as a group are going to receive because of this ONE person.
@gavincci he's the modern, well, modern same-type-of-guy-who-thinks-the-rapture-will-happen-in-his-lifetime-as-every-true-believer-since-the-religion-was-first-invented.
This idiot'll be fine anyway. The idiots I feel sorry for are the ones such as that guy in NY (I think it was) who spent his $140k life savings on an advertising campaign to "warn" people of the impending doom, and now has nothing left. Tragic. And they say faith's harmless...
@eyebrows no one that is a true believer thinks faith is harmless. In fact, the Bible even states that to follow Jesus you must be willing to be persecuted, lose your family, and esentially your life. I'm not sure this guy is truly acting from what the Bible instructs either. He is picking and choosing the parts he wants to focus on, as many lukewarm Christians do. Hopefully they will see that someday.
And I do want to add that I fight not be a lukewarm Christian on a daily basis. It's easy to just see parts and not the whole. It is a constant challenge in my life.
@amyhughes surely every Christian is just picking and choosing the parts they like? You can't take the "book" as a whole due to the internal & external contradictions, so one must cherry pick. Or no?
@eyebrows No. I wish I could sit down with you. It's so much to write in a thread, and so much that I would have to research the actual scripture to give good examples for you. But no, the parts don't contradict like some people say they do, and if people would look at the book as a whole then they would be able to see that.
Oh I know! If you are interested in hearing more about that exact type of thing, look up "A Case for Christ" on Netflix. It's such a great documentary of an investigative journalist (Lee Strobel) with a very skeptical view that spent more than 2 years researching the Bible and it's authenticity.
@amyhughes being broadly familiar with most of the major players on the apologetic side of the fence, I'd say it's a stretch to say Strobel was ever sceptical, but, I shall check this out all the same. :)
This Harold Camping's ministry is worth 80 million dollars. You'd think he'd have quickly spent it all on the poor and destitute, but no, he did not. The guy is another publicity hound in sheep's clothing. I hope he gets socked by the IRS for fraud. THAT, my friends, will be Judgement Day
@tolpol I just glanced at it, my answer to all people like this is the prayer I learnt as a child.The Glory Be.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
I'm going to read the article now *skips away*
