Macro Lens (Canon)

May 25th, 2011
Dear Canon Nation,

I love my EF 50mm f/1.8 II and my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6, but I believe the time has come to consider a better alternative. Any recommendation from the sets of lens you personally own or are on your "wish list"?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Can't beat the 100mm f/2.8L Justin....great for both macro and portrait.

Eversince buying my dSLR I did wonder whether I could justify buying a macro lens. Only the other week I learnt about the existence of a reversing ring! £5, and I'm happy. I appreciate it won't do what a proper macro lens will, but for that price, good enough for me (for now).

Same as @flyden @gavincci ... And I use it to catch kids running around as well. Like it's weight too, quite light!

@viranod what do you think about the 85mm f1.8?

I love that focal length. I have the f1.2 though and at f1.2 it's amazing. But the 85 f1.8 also gets excellent review also, and should be really nice on the 7D. Go for it!

I have the 100 mm 2.8 macro - It is great. I find that the odd time the auto focus fails me and I have to manually focus that last little bit. I think is struggles a bit in low light - at least that is my analysis so far.

Hmm I would love to try out the 85mm 1.2!

@deliriousoul This 85 f1.2 is a gem and I really love it! But if you aim to shoot kids, the 85 f1.8 may be more practical - smaller, probably faster focusing and you don't have to worry too much about f1.2 when kids move around a lot!! But if you want to get into serious portrait...IMO nothing beats this one :)

Like the others, I love my 100mm f/2.8L and highly recommend it. :)
