I am interested in starting to put together a web page. Not necessarily for starting a photography business yet...but just as a way to share photos etc...
For now, it is just something fun for me to do. Eventually, (in my five year plan) I hope to use it to attract work. I am an architect and have years of graphics training and am capable of learning programs etc.. fairly quickly.
I do have some co-workers that could help, but I wondered if any of you had advice on the best way to set up a page that would mostly be related to photography.
books? websites?
thanks
Using zymic.com as a host and a free .co.cc domain name it doesn't have to cost anything to start with - as it builds steam adding a new domain name takes two minutes and costs about $10 a year...
I'm lucky enough to be studying computer science, so I know my way around servers and websites. What I did was rent a dedicated server with some friends, share it so we can each have our own site on it, put a wordpress blog on it, customize it and buy a domainname for it.
An easy way to start a page would be through Wix.com and they are free. They have 2 ways you can do it, one with pre-made templates and a way with out.
If you're looking to really get into the nuts and bolts of websites and how they work (being an architect you may be that way inclined) you'll want to be learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript and some server side stuff to do the grunt work, such as PHP and MySQL. Sounds like a lot but when you break it down and attack each component the right way, it's possible to achieve results pretty quickly. Especially with a logical head.
You'd start out with some webspace, and I recommend (disclosure: link contains my affiliate reference, but I use him myself, he's very good) this guy. Going the whole hog and getting a dedicated server would be yet more stuff to learn and totally unnecessary at this stage. Or any stage even given the culmination of your five year plan.
Or, if you don't want to get into the nitty gritty but want quicker results, using an established platform would be the way to go. There are many, many CMS out there, and I can't recommend a photography-specific one, but there's bound to be some photo-friendly mods and templates for Wordpress. Wordpress you would download, upload to aforementioned webspace, follow simple install procedure, and have a nice web-driven content management system, with no coding knowledge needed.
Or, if you really just wanted to share photos with family short term, sign up for a flickr account.
You could start out with a simple blog (such as blogger.com) or a wiki (I use wikispaces.com). These are easy to create and would work well for displaying photography.
