Live View - Auto Focus

May 26th, 2011
After having my big girls camera (Canon 450) for nearly three years today I tried out the Live View. I generally found it ok to work out how to do the settings but I just have one question, does auto-focus not work on Live View? Doesn't matter if it doesn't but having an active 1 year old it would be handy.

Thank you for any info/help/advice.

Oh, it does! But I don't know if the buttons are the same. I think the zoom one on mine (500D) autofocuses. Though I seldom use live view.

You might have to activate AF during Live View first...

If the 450d's UI is similar to that of the 1000d you'll have to press Menu -> scroll to one of those wrench tabs -> Custom Functions -> Auto fucos / Drive AF during Live View shooting. Select either Quick mode (screen will blank during AF, but this will focus quickly) or Live mode (cam will "search" until focus is achieved)

@indiannie_jones @stinkercat Thank you both for answering.

Annie - I've never used it before but thought after 3 years I better see what it's all about. I think when I have blinding headaches but want to capture a moment it might come in handy.

Junginger - Thank you for that info I'll try and have a play around with those tomorrow.

@coolgirlsar It's useful when you can't otherwise tell what's going on :) also, for mirror shots!

If it helps, I find live view most useful when the camera's perched on a tripod and I have the luxury of plenty of time to do a 10x zoom and manually focus right in. For actually taking stuff "on the fly" the viewfinder's usually the far better option.

This might be easier to digest :)

Note what he does close to the 1-minute mark.

@coolgirlsar Hey Sarah, I have the same camera and I was just searching on this subject too. It does actually auto focus, as Annie said from the button next to the magnifying one, but it takes a couple of seconds to focus than the regular one.
