Canon or Nikon

May 27th, 2011
I'm not getting a DSLR anytime soon, but I'm starting my research a bit early.
I had my eye on the canon rebel t3i
then I decided to compare it to a nikon d90 to see which was better

Since I've never had anything other than a p&s I like to think I'm fairly unbiased, and I think I'd be better off getting a canon

But you all are waaay more experienced than I am and a lot of you have these cameras. So tell me, which do you think is better? Why?

And if you have any SOOC from either of them could you post them here?

Thank you in advance,
Britt

I use canon and love it for the color quality. but then its what i am used to. You can get the same kind of camera quality with both brands though canon typically runs cheaper then nikon.

Well, I might be throwing a wrench into your system, but here's a SOOC from a Sony Alpha

@kissmycoffin check different camera reviews of your choice. They have their own pros and cons. There are good sites that are worth to check. Goodluck!

I use a Nikon D90 and love it! If I was to buy a new camera right now, I'd probably look at a canon 60D mainly because its rear LCD display screen can rotate and move so even when you're shooting at awkward angles (eg. pointing upwards or on the ground), you can still see what the camera is 'seeing' without having to use as much guesswork. Not sure what your budget is though :)

Canon :-)

I used a Nikon once. I didn't like it.

I have a Canon. I love it.

:D

No, but really, at the end of the day, it's just a tool. The results are entirely up to you. We can all tell you what we prefer but that doesn't mean it's the right product for you. You should worry more about lenses than the body / brand. Think about what you may be interested in and look around to compare prices and compatibility and such.

Good luck :)

@webfoot I agree with Paul. I love my Sony a300 Im either going to upgrade to the 580 or the 77 (not out yet).

Personally I think you should be very hands on with a sample camera before you buy. That way you figure out how you like its setup and functions.
May 27th, 2011
@indiannie_jones @kissmycoffin ditto Annie's comments, spot on. It is true that you control the camera, not the other way around. The fight is fierce, cause both brands make excellent electronics and lenses. @webfoot Don't discount what Paul said, their are some terrific brands out there right now, probably more so than in the past 15 years. My photos are taken with a nikon, an olympus 4/3rd E-PL1 and a cell phone in a pinch!

Doesn't really matter what brand of camera to buy. I use Nikon simply because that's what I'm used to. I tried using a Canon before but I don't know how to use it.

I shot Nikon film cameras for years, started digital with a Nikon D70S, and then went over to Canon. Can't say I have a strong preference - they both make excellent kit. They're tools for a job, and certain models excel at certain jobs a little more than others, and few of the models actually line up for direct comparisons (though people try to compare them constantly). Give me either one and there will be things I love, and things I don't, but I'd be happy with either.

Nikon D5000 because of the focus & colors !

I don't think there is a universal answer to this question. Just to talk about what I know, I have the Nikon D90 and I absolutely love it.Most of the pictures in my album are taken with the Nikon. I like the technical possibilities of the camera and the colours! You must absolutely try them, see how they fit in your hands and how the buttons are positioned for your fingers. It's a also a feeling. When I chose I hesitated with a Canon (don't remember which one though) and I was less comfortable with the Canon, it was also bigger in size, and that was an important criteria for me. Then look at the lens availability, their price etc. (also consider Tamron and Sigma for lenses). And look at good reviews to compare the results on pictures.

olympus.
May 27th, 2011
@bobfoto I was actually going to mention how you'd probably jump in and say that :)
May 27th, 2011
Nikon D60 love it
May 27th, 2011
@indiannie_jones - ive seen these threads a few times now, and they're all canon v nikon.

oh well oh well.

For price, weight and quality of lens, you can't go past an olympus.

This one is easy...go to a reputable camera store. Pick up every camera which matches the tchnical definitions you need...see which one feels best in your hands...If it doesnt feel good you won't use it.

I only had a Nikon one time... it was okay... but then I started with the canonĀ“s... and I must tell you... besides the wonderful quality pics they are really resistent.

My first canon survided a very bad sandy storm.
The second 10 minutes under water (it was inside the toilet... thanks god I had at least flushed... ha ha ha)...
And my newest canon 550D survided a very bad fall (1 meter high or 40 inches).

I've got a canon 450 and I love it. I wasn't sure which brand to get when I got my DSLR and what I did was go into a camera shop and try a few different ones out, it's what fits and feels comfortable in your hands that count as well as quality, the 450 just felt perfect in my hands.

NNOOOOOOO, not this subject again!!
May 27th, 2011
I used Nikon film as 15 years ago it was the better of the two main makes - very robust, reliable and well, just better. I used to photograph many protests and riots, and the camera got abused! I'd also heard that Canon were having trouble sorting out the flash and a few other hiccups when the digital's came along. I think since then, there's little in it, and canon are slightly cheaper when comes to DSLR's, but I think I still like Nikon better.

you need to go to a store and hold them, get a feel for them in your hand, i have a nikon because my mum and dad have one and i knew it felt nice when i used it, i have a fairly old(probably almost obsolete) basic model and it is nice and light aswell, couldn't take as many pictures with something heavier

@vikdaddy, don't be mean, not everyone knows what differences there are and they want personal reviews to help them choose the best camera for them ;)
May 27th, 2011
I prefer the "feel" of the Nikon cameras and the menus more than the Canon ones, but you should try them both out if your hands.
May 27th, 2011
There isn't really an answer to this question other than the one you prefer. I have a two canons (350d - yes it's old - and a p&s), I have nothing against Nikons, or in fact any other brand. The first dslr I used was a canon and I became reasonably comfortable with it, I was then able to get a very good deal on my 350d so bought that.

If I was to buy another camera now I would probably choose another Canon, not because I don't like other brands but because Canons are familiar.
As others have said the best way for you to choose is go to a shop and try them out, see which feels most suited to you.

If you want to browse my albums I have quite a few sooc shots.
May 27th, 2011
I just got a Canon 60D and LOVE it.
May 27th, 2011
I personally LOVE my Nikon D5000, but I don't know that it's really going to matter when you're choosing between Nikon and Canon, it's sort of just personal preference. Like the guy told me when I got my dslr, there's no such thing as a bad camera once you start paying this much.
May 27th, 2011
I'm the opposite of @indiannie_jones

Just see if you can borrow one of each and see what you like. Nikon feels intuitive to me, but may not for you.

Also, do any family members or close friends have one of either? Cos you can share lenses that way. That swung it for me in the end.
May 27th, 2011
What @vikdaddy is trying to say is 'Canon'

:)
May 27th, 2011
I've always been a Canon lover, but I'd go to stores and play around with both. One will feel like home. Seriously it will.
May 27th, 2011
There are major pros and cons to both which are essentially based on what you want and how expendable your bank account is going to be..
If you've never owned a DSLR, jumping the gun and getting a D90 probably isn't a very good idea. Stick to entry-level models. Most of them are using the same image sensor as some of their higher end brethren, but those higher end ones are built for professional photography. If you're not going to notice that you can't trace over a slightly-out-of-focus leaf in the far right corner of your photo, zoomed in to 300%.. then you really don't need anything as high-end as the 90D.

In terms of an adjustable LCD, what your main choices should come down to are the D5100 and the t3i. The t3i is a t2i with an adjustable LCD and other than that.. nothing of notice has been changed (A few additional software features on the camera, and that's all) so if it comes down to a battle of image quality, feel free to look at reviews and information considering the t2i as well.
The D5100 uses the same image sensor as the D7000 (so you can expect very similar image quality), while the t2i/t3i uses an almost identical sensor to the 7D.

I've looked through a tonne of image-quality comparisons and the t2i/t3i definitely sports a somewhat better image quality, and seems to be overall better with lower-light conditions, however Canon's current EOS line only has about 20 years of lenses with which to choose from (Canon abandoned its old lens-mount format with the release of the EOS line, so all Canon lenses made before them are useless on current cameras), Nikon has never changed their lens-mount format. Technically, as long as you enjoy working with manual controls (which personally, I prefer), this gives you a far larger range of lenses to choose from.

I love Nikon, well it is true both cameras can produce close images to each other, It is the minor details that stand out to me. Depending on what you want to do and how you take photos depends what you should get. If you enjoy long exposures night shots though i advise you getting a Nikon! (there are many websites were you can compare low level lighting and Nikon is always the champ). Also idk about you but i hate cheap feeling things ya know. While both my (nikon d5000) and my girlfriends camera (cannon rebel) are very similar in photo quailty, the feel is quite different. Cannon Bodies tend to feel a bit cheaper plastic type of feel while Nikons have been coated down to give it a nicer feel in your hand . Idk its the little pet peaves that matter really, whichever way you go you will have fun time but I love the brand and company Nikon

Obviously, my personal preference is going to be the deciding factor. I know that so I don't need 30 people telling me that, lol

I'm just interested in your opinions of the cameras. I've read reviews and they're not a ton of help, while they do help a little.

I guess I'll have to find time to go to a store and play around with each of them.

Thanks everyone

I have a Nikon D90 and love it, but don't think you can go wrong with the Canon either. I have been very pleased with the camera itself, the images it produces, and the product service I've received from Nikon on the rare occasions I needed it.
