Okay, so dick smith is having a sale and the choice between the following 2 cameras, im a complete beginner so really dont know a thing .. All i do know is i definately want a really good zoom so i can capture my kids playing without being in their face .. And i want something that takes the photo quickly, and takes many photos one after another ..
The 2 cameras are :
Nikon d3100 dslr twin lens kit. 14.2 megapixels, hd movie, 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. $998
And nikon d5100 dslr twin lens kit. 16.2 megapixels. 30" vari-angle lcd. 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses. $1498
Obviously, if both of these cameras are no good or not really value for money i would like to know that too so i can keep looking ..
Any opinions at all would be hugely appreciated ..
Thanks, sharon :-)
Sorry for any typos, am typing on my phone and cant go back to review what iv written .. Hope it makes sence!?!?
I'm a canon user myself and can't fault them but have read many reviews on Nikon that say it is quite a good camera as well. Obviously the second option you've listed is going to be better quality. The mega pixels are higher and the lenses it comes with have a wider range. The D3100 shoots 24 frames per second and the D5100 shoots 30 frames per second.
The lenses in the D5100 kit are going to give you a bigger zoom too... allowing you to get those close ups you want of your children.
@kezzam - thanks HEAPS!! .. and yes, of course you can suggest Canon, I'm hoping to get lots of opinions as i really don't know where to start .. if im going to learn i think i need the good camera and then i can go from there .. others have suggested learning and then getting the camera but im finding that hard!! .. thanks.
@indiannie_jones - sure is .. i don't know what it is, but i know it exists as my Dick Smith catalogue tells me it does :-)
oh .. what part of the world are you in to not know Dick Smith?!?!?! .. it's just another electric store here .. an electric store with a REALLY stupid name!! hehe
@sharonsutherlan - I'd ignore the D3100 if you want it to last you a long time as you grow as a photographer. I don't know much about the D5100, except it's an upgraded version of the D5000 which I have and love. IT's not been out long though, so if you look around you might be able to find D5000 for quite a saving on that price. Ths D5100 that I just looked at is nearly £200 more than I paid for my D5000, with one lens.
Bear in mind as well that with Nikons, most of their lenses for film cameras will be compatible but you'll have to manually focus, so buying a brand new lens isn't necessarily always essential.
I've also just seen that over here in the UK you can get the D90 for the same price as the D5100 but with a bigger lens. That would allow you to autofocus almost every Nikon lens ever made, from what I understand. I think if I'd known that when I got mine (silly salesman forgot to mention that bit), I'd have gone for it.
@sharonsutherlan I so miss Dick Smith stores. So difficult to find a good electrical store like that in the UK - nothing compares. Good thinking to get the camera before learning. That's how I did it and I have never looked back. Did eventually upgrade to an even better one but that comes with time. I use a Canon 50D now and love it!
Happy shopping!

I just read some reviews online that may help you with your research. I would always recommend looking at the forums online and reviews before you buy.

Can I be cheeky and suggest that you have a look at Canon? That's just me though. Have fun shopping. Hope this info helps you.

I think there may be Dick Crackers which you can spread all of this on. He is really a nice guy and electronics was one of his early ventures.
