Lens Suggestions Please

June 2nd, 2011
Hi, I have a Canon 500D which I purchased with the kit lens, plus a 50mm 1.8. I am looking to purchase a new lens to take when we go camping, but am not sure which lens/lens to go for, not wanting to spend huge amounts of money but I do want something decent. Would be for travel photography plus family travel photos. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

the canon 55-250 probably fits the bill. good reach, and good for snap shots. If you have enough light, you can even get some pretty amazing shots with it.

you can find them used for under $200 (usually from folks who out grew the lens!) in good/new condition all over the place.

Okay, someone give me a clue. I am so bad at posting to these topics. My picture is listed as the URL above. How do I make it a real picture posted here?

does canon make a good weather proof lens? Is the Canon 500D WR? any ways for camping I am all over my 31mm 1.8 good low light... don't need to carry a bunch of junk... or a 18-125 mm WR lens if I wanted something walk around... sigma, tam make them... I am sure canon has something in that range...

what do you want the lens to do?

to me camping means...

don't change lens... dirt in camara...so wide zoom or prime...
fast f-stop... good low light...
small and compact... because it is small and compact...
metal build... you are camping...
WR...because it can rain out.... or beer showers...
I find anything longer than 41mm too long on a crop sensor... the trees can get in close... so unless you want to bird(200mm range) and 18-50mm range is great...

hey you have the kit lens...why not spend the cash on a nice bird book? (I am being serious here) what will you new lens give you?
