a friend is looking for a new camera, she is looking at nikons but what is the difference between a coolpix and not?

this is the one she is looking at at the mo, does anyone have any other suggestions for other cameras in this price range at this spec?

i am not positive on price, but i carry a coolpix s4000 with me at all times and love it. it does great in low light, takes sd cards, so i can drop them right into my laptop, touch screen, and i haven't been able to destroy it and have had it for over 6 months, which is kinda impressive as rough as i am on things.

Mine P&S is a Coolpix, an old one (S200) but it took all of the first 6 weeks or so of my project pictures (sooc) and is now 3 years old and still going strong despite spending most of it's time in my pocket or handbag!

I think, though I'm not sure, that coolpix is just the word that Nikon use to describe the range of point and shoot cameras they make.

I have a Kodak EasyShare M550 and it takes awesome pictures. It takes a bit to get used to the settings and figure out things work and what you need for this or that, but I like mine. I don't need a $1,000 camera. My $150 Kodak works just fine.

I've got a Lumix and I'm very happy with it!

I am Nikon 100% when it comes to DSLRs (I've got a D60 and a D300s), but I'm not much of a fan of their P&S options. Personally (*looks around to make sure fellow Nikon users are not watching*), for £10 more on that same site, I'd rather recommend the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS. (I've got the SX 120 IS, and like it a lot for P&S situations).

Cheers!

If you're going for a P&S Canon and Panasonic are the way forward - they're easier to use

I have a Panasonic P&S, the LX5, and I love it. Very easy to figure out. I've used Canon P&S as well, and I would recommend either one.

Definitely Canon Powershot in any of its incarnations.

@davidchrtrans GASP!!!!!! BLASPHEMY!!!! and all that such!!! actually i considered a canon p/s but one of the areas i shoot a lot involves reflective fire gear. the canon did worse than the nikon in that area. granted, the nikon did not do much better, but that is a specific area that not everyone would have that concern with. lifehacker had an interesting article which makes me consider getting a canon to see how it will do after i hack it - http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-point+and+shoot-into-a-super+camera is the article. sorry, had to give a tiny bit of grief for the comment - i love that argument - it can be fun when a friend and i are somewhere screaming at each other which is best, all the other patrons don't know what to think, and we get great joy out of baffling people. often we will even switch sides and argue them, just to really baffle others that are listening in.

she was looking at a lumix originally because that's what i have and she knows the quality etc but the newer models for a similar spec are higher in price and she is limited to where she can't buy from so can't shop around for a cheaper older model

I've been looking at either a Lumix TZ20 or Canon S95 recently too but I want it for concerts, so while it looks like the Lumix is better for that, I would probably opt for the Canon for everyday use.
