camera choices for those wearing varifocal glasses

June 9th, 2011
I'm thinking of upgrading as a very generous elderly uncle is giving me £300.00 and hubby insists I spend it on me...
Current camera is a tiny Sony DSc-W50 6MP which I've had several years.
I chose it because it had a viewfinder and I seem to have difficulty with LCD screen and varifocal glasses.
So .. any ideas for a good 'un with a viewfinder , or has technology moved on .

I can add a bit more to the kitty, and we have a local longstanding independant camerashop to which I can go , but would welcome any thoughts and suggestions

I have varifocals and never had trouble. On my last camera - a point and shoot - I used the LCD screen to view with. But with my DSLR I used the viewfinder, no problems.

@annielf Thanks , I see you have a canon EOS550 so will definitely research that one.

I am very happy with my Nikon D90. I don't know how it works with veri-focal lens but if others don't have problems with their DSLR, I would assume you would be fine with this one. You may have to look around to find one in your price range. I got a great deal on mine, plus I have older Nikkor lenses to use with it so it worked out for me that way also.

@june I got mine in the US so it's the T2i equivalent. Love it. I've got no other DSLR to compare it to as it's my first. But I have no complaints. After many dead slow P & S's it seems like it's the speed of light!

@june I have varifocals as well and never had an issue. I have a Canon 7D, best of luck whatever you get.

@tolpol Thanks , been slow to reply but have had a look online and think this may be the winner.because i want a camera that is not too heavy to pop in a handbag ( I know , that's a ladies' concern ) Just visited my son at the weekend and he was explaining RAW and I see this even gives that option ,

I have gone for broke !!!!

my son just kept encouraging me to make the jump.
so now i am in free-fall on a learning curve.. but the viewfinder is great and I am loving using it.

Great to hear you found one! I bought a get to know your D90 type book( kinda like an owners manual but easier to read ). I haven't made it thru it yet but the camera can do lots of amazing stuff . I felt like I have the basics down so now I try changing things like the white balance temp rather than just the white balance type...its kicking my butt but I am slowly getting it. You will really enjoy it.
