Lens Decision: EF 28-135mm or EF-S 18-135mm

I have a Canon Rebel XT with a kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 70-300mm in my bag today.

I have been eyeing the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens to replace the kit lens on my Rebel XT to try to get some sharper images and increase range. I don't want to pay for an L series but looking for something new. I was just about the pull the trigger, when a friend showed me EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens
This is a little newer cheaper, wider, and EFS vs EF, but not USM. Since the EF would be on a cropped sensor, I would lose even more on the wide end, but does USM make up for it? Which would you chose and why?

Then of course this comes across my radar while looking and I'm not sure if it would be even better or not: EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens

Out of all three, what would your choices be in order, and why?

Or is there another lens you would recommend in the ~$400 range

I had the 28-135 lens, and I have to say that it doesn't complement a rebel body. I sold it and replaced it with an EF-S lens, the newer, lighter type that's better suited to crop frame bodies like yours.

If you can afford it, go for the EF-S 15-85mm, which is awesome, or it's older brother the 17-85mm, which is cheaper and again much better suited - no question. I think you'd regret buying the EF lens.

The Ef 28-135 won't be much cop for wide shots, I use an EF 28-70 most of the time it's good for all round but not particularly wide on a crop sensor. On the long end you'd get that little bit more, however you've already got the 70-300 so that's irrelevant.

What @vikdaddy said about the EF-S being better suited is absolutely true and the lower weight's a good thing too, the rebel's quite light and would maybe feel a little weird with EF lenses.

The 70-300 makes the 18-200 not as big an upgrade, unless you shoot where you'd need that wide a range and don't have any time to swap lenses...

@mallocarray I know this is an old discussion, but I'm going to be replacing my kit lens on my Canon Rebel and am trying to make the same decision. What option did you go with? Are you happy with your choice?

@lisjam1 I ended up with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens and love it. I haven't needed anything wider and shooting st 2.8 with variable zoom has been awesome. http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-28-75mm-Aspherical-Canon-Digital/dp/B0000A1G05/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344653961&sr=8-1&keywords=tamron+28-75mm+f2.8
