Buying a new camera: Sony a55 or Sony a580

June 23rd, 2011
Help! I have it narrowed down to Sony a55 or Sony a580 (due to significant investment in Sony lenses.) I currently have a Sony a100 and have been generally happy with it. I will have to use this camera for several years so I want to make the right choice. The choice is further complicated because we are going to New Zealand for our dream vacation and I want something suitable for the beautiful landscapes there. HELP PLEASE!

I've been reading a lot of camera reviews lately, so I can't say from direct experience, and they're rated pretty close. I would personally lean toward the a580 because it has less noise at high ISO, is rated higher for image quality, higher dynamic range, and longer battery life. But then that's a matter of personal preference, and determining what's more important to you. For the landscapes in New Zealand, I would opt for the higher image quality and higher dynamic range. But if you plan on shooting video, or if the weight of the camera is an issue, then I would definitely consider the a55. Just my 2-cents-worth! Hopefully someone with hands-on experience with either of these cameras will give some input.

@shortperson @tford Nevermind, I see you already found each other. I went back and read it again and noticed it you had already brought it up! Sorry for wasting your time with notifications.

@shadesofgrey :) Thanks!

@tford Im partial to the 580. But I think you have to handle both of them to really know which one fits you best. Like i said if you cant find a 580 in store (they seem hard to find right now) look for a 560 just to try (its practically the same camera). Let us know which one you choose!!! I agree with Jordan 100% that threw me off when testing the 55, that view finder was weird to me.

I forgot to add that video quality is pretty good with the 580. But I have noticed (compared to my A300) that the 580 uses the batteries quicker. Im not sure if your 100 takes the 'M' Battery but the 300 and the 580 also do.

Hard choice, i currently have a A380 and want to upgrade and depending on the moment it is either the A55 or the A580. The A55 appeals to me because of the faster shots per second, mainly because my daughter does trampoliningg which is inside, normally dark stadiums and I figure the more shots per second I can get off the better chance of getting a good one. And at other times I think the 580 would be better. Both have good reviews. I think when the times comes that I can afford a new camera body the one that feels best in my hand will be the one I go with.
