Trying to decide on a camera

So fellow 365ers I am looking to get a new DSLR my Canon Rebel Xti is on it's last legs & need something new. I am looking to stick to Canons because I have a bunch of great Canon lenses. So what is you favorite Canon out now & why?

I'm a Nikon user but I would go for a 7D or a 5D Mark II if I were in your shoes. :)

Well I can vouch for how great the 7D is and I'm only 17, but for most people, the 7D, 5D and up are a little complicated, theres not a bunch of "scene modes" and Auto modes like on the Xti, it's a lot more manual, knowing shutter control and aperture control. The learning curve between the Xti and 7D or 5D is like going straight from elementary school and going straight into high school. For somebody going from an Xti try the new Canon Xt3i or a bit bigger jump could be to a 40D or 50D. At most, I would try newer 60D, but the other ones are for more advance amateur, semi pro, or second body pro. If you want to make a big jump though, do like I did. Ive had several years of schooling, and for the first 3/4 of the schooling, we learned using Tmax 400 B&W film on manual film cameras like pentax, canon and nikons. It made a jump from a small Sony A300 to a Canon 7D so much easier. I knew how to control apertures, shutters, and ISO and how to calculate each one to get the right exposure along with metering and using external flashes as "fill lights" and ratio studio lighting. This was all just high school photography classes taught by a professional photographer, but I bet you can find a local community college or school where you can take some photography classes. Sorry for the length, but just want to make sure you know the different jumps and curves with these cameras. Good luck!!! :)

I invested in the Canon 60D and love it! I had thought about getting the 7D, which is an awesome camera, but when the 60D came out with many of the same features as the 7D (but at a better price point), I chose the 60D. I can say I haven't been disappointed. Good luck with your decision!!

If you have any EF-S lenses that you like, forget the full-frame cameras like the 5D Mark II or 1D-series. If you don't have any EF-S lenses you like... :D

The 7D is probably the premium crop-frame Canon DSLR. It has good weather sealing, great A-F system, and an excellent sensor. As Kody said, it is far more "manual" than the entry level cameras, so you need to know what you are doing with aperture, shutterspeed, ISO etc or you will be limited to the green square of doom (plain old auto setting). If I didn't shoot full-frame, I'd shoot a 7D. The 7D is the only semi-pro crop-frame Canon DSLR. Not counting the fully-pro sports-perfect 1D Mark IV of course, because that's a 1.3-ratio crop, and can't use EF-S lenses.

The 60D is sort-of the new Rebel. Sort-of, because it is better, and also because it isn't a true upgrade of the 50D - in many ways, it is a downgrade. Not knocking it - it is an excellent camera, but where the 50D was semi-pro, the 60D is enthusiast - lighter, smaller, less sturdy body, only one custom function on the dial, articulating screen - it is aimed at those who previously owned Rebels and want to upgrade, because Canon is trying to push the 50D and other X0D series users to the 7D. At my place of "regular employment" we have a mix of 50D and 60D cameras (and a couple of others) - I have held onto my 50D cameras because I have big hands, and the 60D cameras feel like toys to me. I also like having custom functions on the dial, and the 60D only gives me one. But most people would not care about that, and would find its other features to be a step up from the 50D. And it is definitely a step up from the Rebel!

You really can't go wrong - you just have to decide what features you want, and which one best fits your shooting style. Good luck!

I just bought a Canon T1i body only (got it for less than $600 and all my lens work). LOVE IT! Upgraded from XS. I so want a 5D, but it's not economical right now. I am so pleased with my purchase. Good luck!

@klittle @exposure4u @jinximages @cfitzgerald @steveh Thanks all for all the info. To tell you the truth the Reble Xti was a step down for me & I use none of those "scene modes" & auto is for when the hubby uses it. I am pretty much self taught but had some schooling as well in college & used to develop my own film. I honestly prefer controlling as much as possible & miss my manual 35mm SLR & darkroom (haven't had a chance to set it up here). I think I have gotten lazy LOL
I would love to go for the 7D or 5D Mark II but honestly don't think I can justify the price at this point. =( Grr decisions decisions...
