Nikon Coolpix P7000 vs Canon Powershot G12

July 16th, 2011
Saw some great pictures here on 365 taken with the Canon G12. When I began researching, most reviews put it up against the Nikon Coolpix P7000. Right now Amazon has the Nikon for $125 less than the Canon. I have had many Canon cameras but have no experience with a Nikon. Anyone have experience with both?

I have a Canon G10 and a Nikon 5000, a DSLR. To buy either one used would cost about the same. Both take great pictures. The one thing I prefer about the Canon is that you don't have to fiddle with the menu to change either ISO or exposure compensation. There are two convenient dials right on top. I don't know how the Nikon Coolpix work, but I would look at how you change settings. It seems like the quality of the photos is the same, base on what I've seen on this site.

I LOVE the variable angle lcd screen - wouldn't give it up for anything...not sure if the Nikon has one but that would be my clencher!

I can't comment on the Nikon, but I have a Canon G12 and love it. The only problem I have with it is that the flash is hopeless for macro shots as it is placed to the side). I got extension tubes and a range of filters and lenses for it easily and cheaply. It's a nice size, portable and fairly resilient (mine has been dropped a few times, and attacked regularly by two parrots...).

If you can get to a camera shop, have a look and play with both, then decide....
The July edition of Practical Photography did a test-drive of both, if you can get hold of it. (The conclusions were that the Nikon was the best overall - longer zoom and lower price-, but the G12 is more responsive, with faster playback). Let me know if you want a copy of the article...

Nod
Look at the comparison here..

I personally would also go for Canon as they have been making this line of camera for a while. I don't have it though but I have used Canon S90 and loved it.

I actually sell cameras as my part time job (not as fun as it sounds), so I've played around with both cameras. Although, admittedly, I've used the G12 more as someone I know has it. Personally, I prefer the G12. I find the colour replication to be a little nicer --the P7000 was producing rather yellow test shots for me, regardless of settings (WB, etc). That may have just been in my particular lighting (in my store), but the G12 has never had this issue for me.

Like @alia_801 said, the best thing you can do is go check them out yourself! :)

I've the G12 and like it as much as I could a pocket camera. No experience with the Nikon, but I would advance this caution: the longer the zoom range, the more chance of aberration, softer focus, etc. If you can, take your own SD card to the store and shoot with both. It will not be the best test, but should give you some indication.

I'm a Nikon person when it comes to DSLRs (and SLRs before that)... I can't imagine being enticed to "jump ship" to Canon there. HOWEVER, I have not yet used a Nikon P&S that has left me fully satisfied... I'm not a fan of the Coolpix line. My P&S choice (and recommendation) is the Canon Powershot line: I've been very pleased with the ones I've owned. So I'd say go with the G12 if your budget allows...
