She is familiar with and a Canon EOS and a Sony Cybershot (p&s). The former is her son's camera (my brother) and he's wanted it back. The latter has come to the end of its life and makes her very frustrated!
It's time for a new camera!
She has done some research (!) and has asked me for my opinion regarding the following three shortlisted options. Quite frankly I have no clue. So I said I'd ask you guys. You can see from her profile some examples of the type of photographs she takes (which I think is a little skewed away from "people", which she also takes a lot of), but I know she'd like to be able to "do more" than the current (faulty) P&S allows her...
1) Panasonic DMC-FZ38
2) Sony DSC-HX1
3) Canon EOS (not sure which model she's been looking at, but recently she's been using my brother's 550D)
I'm sure your opinions will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for comment. I am very happy with EOS but am worried that, because of its size, I shall not bother carrying it everywhere and the other two are "bridge" cameras and would be a bit smaller to carry.
i have a canon powershot sx130is. its got a lot of power, but its not as big and bulky as like a DSLR would be. it goes EVERYWHERE with me. its just worth mentioning, i figured, as you seem to be drawn to canons.

I prefer the layout of canons but everyone is different.
