I saw a story on the news yesterday which warmed my heart, and I thought i would share with you. Its totally off topic so please excuse me.
There was always two long term residents at our local Aquarium, Laurel & Hardie, the seals. Back in March 2010 we suffered from major storms, and a huge wave crashed over the fencing of the sea pool where Laurel & Hardie lived. Hardie was washed out to sea. People were asked to keep a eye out for him, as being in captivity for 20 years, they believed that he could not hunt for food and thought he was at risk of starving in the wild. Thankfully Hardie was tagged, and later found swimming with other seals, and being able to feed himself. The decision was made to leave him in the wild and just monitor him.
This left Laurel all by herself at the aquarium, and her long term partner gone. Last week a new seal called Togo arrived at St Andrews aquarium, and was placed in a seperate pool to adjust before being introduced to Laurel. Watch the video clip to see what happened next..
Well- it's not that far off topic. If it wasn't for the security camera, the aquarium people would only be able to speculate as to what actually happened. Thanks to the camera they know for sure. How often does one of our cameras record a precious moment, a minute detail, a sweeping panorama that had we not captured it, would have become a distant memory or mere speculation? So, I think you were actually on topic in a way.
I guess we should no longer call the older woman/younger man phenomenum "Cougars" It is more like, oh she is such a seal. Go Laurel for getting rid of the old Hardie and finding a new young pup.
Years ago I can face to face with a seal while diving. I had a camera with me. Unfortunately I had it set up for macro so I could have taken a picture of 1 sq cm of it had it let me get that close. Had to settle for the mental picture.
