it only happens once in awhile, out of nowhere. i edit a photo, save, and this is how it saves. varying sizes of gray area. doesnt save an original. bye bye photo. anyone else?

That happened all the time when I used photoscape. I learned fast to always check the save photo before closing out the photo in photoscape.

I don't know what causes this, so can't offer a cure. But if you do a "save as", rather than "save", and change the name slightly you'll avoid over writing the original file. So if the worst happens you can re-open the original and start over.
