Getting the Bug to Upgrade My Camera: Stop Me!

August 10th, 2011
So, I currently use a Nikon D90 and it's a terrific camera. But, being a technoholic, I tend to get the bug to upgrade electronics every so often. I've had my D90 for about 4 or 5 years now, and, in all honesty, I have no complaints with it. But . . .

I've been looking at the Nikon D7000 and the rumored D800. The D7000 is another DX camera but with 16.1 mp and other nice features the D90 doesn't have. The D800 (might be announced Aug 24 but no one knows) is FX. If I went FX, I'd be spending almost twice as much as for the D7000 and at least one of my lenses wouldn't work. If I went with the D7000, all my lenses would work, but I'd be upgrading to another DX. Some photographers claim that moving to the FX is what all "real" photogs must do. Others claim that, unless you're planning to sell your pics for lots of moula, an FX is overkill.

Anyone with a D7000 want to comment on its glorious qualities? Anyone have advice on the FX vs. DX debate? Anyone want to stop me from my technoholism with a 12-step program? Save me from myself or enable me: you choose.

I wouldn't get too hung up on Mega pixels, they are used these days as more of a gimic as people see more and think its better, truth is it doesn't make a great deal of difference unless you are printing your photos billboard size but even then there is not a great deal of difference between a 12 mp camera and a 16mp camera to have any real difference you have to at least double the pixel count, I would focus more on its features

@asrai You're right, of course, about the megapixel thing. The D7000 has tons of other nifty features that are tempting, including two SD card slots, faster shooting, more focus points, better dynamic range, etc. It also has auto-focus video, but I rarely use my camera for video. Oh, and the D7000 is weather sealed. I think I just talked myself into it again.

I am here to enable. My name is Cissy and I am a technoholic.

I upgraded to the D7000 from my beloved D90, and have never looked back. I do feel that the D90 was instrumental in helping me advance as a photographer and for that I will remember it fondly. I sold it and did well on that transaction, given that the D90 is still in Nikon's product line and benefits from having a well-deserved great reputation.

The D7000 has allowed me to continue advancing; it is sophisticated, yet simple, and a logical progression from the D90. Its focus system is particularly wonderful. To me, it offers many pro features with prosumer ease of use, the best of both worlds.

I too considered an FX camera; however, I had the same lens situation and with the great reviews I had read about the D7000, particularly that of Ken Rockwell, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d7000.htm, I had to jump. I love my D7000 (but of course, when the next great thing comes out, I'll be on it like a duck on a june bug!) Good luck, and accept the things you cannot change: you will get a new camera!

Can't help you with the Nikon vs Nikon stuff, but I have something to think about on FX vs. DX. It's an adjustment, if you like to use primes. I love the 50mm on the cropped sensor, but not so much on the full frame camera. Now, I want to get an 85mm just for the FF body. Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else loose a little love for thier "nifty fifty" after switching to full frame?

@coastandcactus Thank you, O Enabler. Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to go with the D7000 and not bother trying to do FX. Looks like everything FX is just more expensive and I'm not a pro, so I don't need something that expensive. Every review of the D7000 has been really positive, so I don't think I could go wrong. I'm just not sure I could sell my D90. I've learned so much with it and it's like a good friend.

@otprofsp I use the D7000 and I love it. I take it everywhere. It’s so easy to get used to working with all the controls and settings. The quality of the pictures is great. Good luck with your search.

OMG. Just pressed the "buy" button on Amazon. Couldn't resist. They had a deal where you got $250 off a lens if you bought the camera. I've been wanting the 18-200mm zoom, so I got that too. I'm hopeless.

Susan good luck with your new camera, you deserve nice things, and if you use it well thats a plus, don't let it sit, learn it and sell the old, then you can keep gettting nicer things

@otprofsp I had the same nostalgic feelings for the D90, but I needed to sell it to afford the new toy. I was blessed to sell it via eBay to a wonderful guy in Chicago who couldn't wait to get it and fall in love with it too. So, it went to a good home. Maybe the same will be the case for you. That said, the D90 would be an awesome backup camera if you can afford to keep it and buy the new one. Good luck to you!
