I'm expect this has been covered before, apologies if so. I am looking for some advice on photo editing software. I am currently only using the free stuff..picnik and gimp, but i think i am going to splash out buy something decent.
What are your personal favourite photo editing packages and why?
@bec01
Well, I use Gimp and Digikam.
I manage my photos and do some basic stuff(importing RAW, levels, rotation, cropping ) using Digikam and use Gimp for advance manipulations.
Photoshop can take a bit of getting used to - well, for me at least! It works in layers and once you get your head around that, half the battle is over.
@foolmoon@tjramutkowski@raebell When you say "Photoshop" do you mean Photoshop Elements or the full blown program? Is Elements enough for someone that's still a beginner?
@lisjam1 I have the "full blown" version...It's the CS series. Not familiar with elements, but they should be quite similar, probably just a few extras with elements.
Photoshop Elements or the full package?
Sorry, but it depends on what you want to do! Sounds like a cop-out, but Elements will do most things most people will need - changing light levels, saturation, cloning, cropping etc. No too pricey at around £50
Full versions are more complex and have added features like puppet warp, HDR, photo aware, lens correction et al. Prices are high, unless you qualify for the student/teacher edition at around £150
But there are other options, GIMP is free and will fulfill most of Elements functions.
@azza_l@soxfansara@mallocarray thank you for your replies. i am looking for something relatively cheap, i dont think i could afford the photoshop cs version, i just looked on amazon and the mac version is nearly £600.
@bec01 I use Photoscape for a lot of my images. It's basic, but fun and easy to use with some nice features and it's free. Not a replacement for a more complex program like Photoshop, but it has its uses. I just got Serif PhotoPlus X4 and am undecided about it, but it appears to be fairly sophisticated in terms of its available tools (less expensive then either version of Photoshop). http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php
@bec01 Do you have a Mac? Pixelmator is only $30 in the Mac App Store (not to be confused with the app store for iPhones) and you can do some pretty in depth stuff with it... curves, channel mixer, cloning, filters, brushes, layers... all sorts of things!
