Incorrect focus

August 24th, 2011
Since I have gotten my new camera it seems I can't get my photos to focus on what I want. For example, if I focus on the baby the background is in focus and the baby is blurred or vice versa. I just set everything in Auto right now. (I would love to be able to read my manual, but it's in Spanish) so I haven't messed around with the settings too much. With my old camera, also a P & S everything just "worked" What's up? thanks for any help.

Do you have any internal settings, like Children, Beach, Macro etc? My elph would get blurry when it would be set on auto, but then had an inner menu that also included Macro, which would make things blurry. Have you taken it to a camera store, maybe it's faulty. I hope you figure it out soon.

What camera is it? Your most recent photo says it is a Coolpix? You can probably find the manual online at the Nikon site.

You need to read up on focus lock, if there is such a thing for your camera. For example point the camera at baby, press shutter half way to focus, once it locks focus reframe the shot (keeping shutter button halfway pressed so it doesn't change focus) then take the shot.

I'd suggest you say what camera you have and hopefully others with that camera can help.

I have a Nikon Coolpix l120. There should be a button on your camera. It looks like a flower. It should be on the directional buttons. Click that and then it should say Macro? & click yes. That'll help!

check and make sure the focus is on single and not continuous.

Just as Christopher Byrd stated, make sure it's on single focus. Some cameras have focus settings for area and spot focus. Try changing these and see what happens. Good luck!

@Missy, lock your settings to "Portrait" that is the one with a picture logo from among the picture settings. Then follow Michael's advise on pressing the shutter half-way to focus first, etc. Good luck!

also check to make sure you are not set to macro focus. i ran into that on a coolpix, then realized i just needed to switch off macro and it started focusing again.
