Speedlight questions?!?

August 31st, 2011
Peeps, i'm interested in using speedlights and hope you could help me. We know that to use our built-in flash, we either be in auto preset mode or pop-up the flash for other modes. If you attach a speedlight on-camera or off camera using remote (and not in auto mode), do we need to pop-up the built-in flash as well? Does the camera recognises that a speedlight is ready to flash and compensate to avoid over-exposure? Pardon my innocence but thanks in advance you guys!

Once you put on a speedlight, the pop-up will not pop anymore. The camera knows the flash is there and will adjust. The flash will even fire a test flash, meter the result and then do the calculated power for the actual shot, all in less than a blink of the eye.

You can put the flash on and try turning it off and on and you'll see the camera change the shutter speed as it detects the flash.

Looking at your picture, it seems you have a Nikon D3100?

If so, you can use a Nikon flash (SB-400/600/700/800/900) on camera in iTTL mode and the camera will use the flash in its exposure calculations.

Some Nikon cameras have a built in "commander" in the pop up flash, which can control speedlights off camera, but the D3100 does not have this capability. So for off camera flash, you have to use a flash sync cord, radio triggers, or a Nikon SU-800.

With the sync cord or SU-800, I think the camera will still take the flash into consideration and calculate the right exposure. With radio triggers you'd have to set the flashes on manual and adjust the camera exposure yourself.

@ronphotography I have a Nikon SB-400, its small, light and does a great job. Ican take it anywhere because of its compact size, the batteries last forever..

@tori3012 I already have a Yongnuo 460 (cheepie) but haven't played with it very often, if I upgrade i'll definitely consider SB-400, thanks.
