What lens to buy?

September 5th, 2011
I need to buy a new lens before February, I've got a Canon Eos Digital Rebel (yep, the original), and will need to ideally zoom across a high school basketball court and take decent action shots. I don't really want to spend more than $450. Suggestions?

@jessicaelaine for action photography, you would need a long lens 200mm atleast, and shooting the whole court you would need a wide angled lens 18mm, i guess 18mm-200mm is best, not sure about the price for Canon but it'll be cheaper for Sigma or Tamron i reck'n, good luck.

how about the Tamron 18-270mm. I've had mine for over 2 years now and use it for almost everything. You'll probably need it on a tripod thou. Good luck!!!

@ronphotography I guess maybe I wasn't clear in part of that - I don't need to see the whole court, just be able to see across it. :) But knowing the mm I need is super helpful, thank you.

@yotan18 Doesn't price suck? :(

@spthorne @patsypetersen Thank you for the recommendations! :)

Look at the Canon 70-300 IS USM great lens a little more than you said you wanted to spend. Best Buy has it on sale right now for 550. Might check ebay for a used one. Here is a link with info. http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_158210_-1

@hollandcrew That sounds like an excellent lens. Thank you for the link!

@pocketmouse How would you say the zoom would be across a gym, lengthwise? :)

Pretty good!! I used it across a ~20 metre pool and it got nice and close :)
