I love B&W photography. I mainly use it for portraits , flowers but I think b&w can look great in any type of photography (with the exception of food perhaps!). It all depends on what you are emotion, story or look you trying to convey. Here's one of my recent ones:
while I will leave my opinion to myself. I think Calvin and Hobbes summed it up perfectly. If you click on my not very bnw image, you will be able to read the exchange between Calvin and his very clever Dad.
I seem to shoot black and white when I am in a certain mood or when the colour photograph just doesn't seem to work. This photo worked in black and white but not in colour.
@michellina i saw this thread and took a photo of my daughters today to specifically make b&w ... i don't do enough b&w, and i really like it too, especially for people :)
I think Jinx summed it up nicely for me... if I want to capture what something looks like I use colour.. if I want to capture the feel then I go for black and white or sometimes when I love a photo for the composition but it hasn't it turned out right...
Good example is this one I accidentally over exposed with the flash on her face but managed to save it and love it as it is

Just use it if I think it makes the picture stronger.
(i tried to show how black and white can work in any situation)
A colour photograph shows how something looks. A black and white photograph shows how something feels.
For me, it is people, but I have used it for landscapes a number of times.
I also use it when there is a big contrast between light and dark.
