I've beening looking around at schools for photography, specifically portrait, and have heard mixed opinions about what schools actually provide you with training to make a career with. Any opinions? Suggestions?

I went to a class (at a local college) where we used all manual 35mm film SLRs and then developed our own black and white film. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything! If you can find something like that around you, you will not regret it.

But to get started now, you should sign up for digitalphotographyschool's weekely newsletter (email). I often find very helpful hints each week!

And you know, it never hurts to practice any time and everytime you can. There's lots of people that will 'model' for you for free. And if you can't find someone, there's always yourself. My favorite photos are self portraits. It's the ultimate creative experience, being in control in front the camera AND behind the camera.

Im with you Steven, I want to proceed with educating myself, i want to know how to set up studio and take portraits in a studio, I was to go into a college or night school.i don't know how to get all my questions answered. I would like an online program with lots of opportunity to speak to someone. I also have heard that mac computer is a great investment if you like photography. I however am learning all the time for free online. Like Jessica said you can always find free opportunities with different models.

@sweett Sadly, I first started getting into photography several years ago with an old Nikon 35mm film camera doing black and whites and after only a few rolls of film it was stolen.

Thank you for suggesting the DPS! I visited the website and it has useful information.

@missvicki I worked in video production and video and photo editors all say Mac's are best for editing. They're also three times the price so it depends on software preference.

I'm asking about schooling mostly because I have two family members that went to art institutes that they say were a big waste of time and money. One of the teachers actually told my uncle that their was no future career to be made from going to the institute, failed everyone and offered a "make up" class for a fee. Same thing happened to my cousin and working with video production all the video guys say they don't take art institute education seriously.
