I am about to start a photography program with the 3rd graders (ages 8 and 9) at my school. Has anyone taught photography to children before? Any suggestions for topics or projects that have worked well in the past? I appreciate any ideas.
hmm. you could give them a theme of some sort. At that age, the things around them and what they love to do is SO important to them. So maybe you could just let them photograph their every day life...or their life on the weekend...Or you could narrow it down for instance "photograph textures"..but that might be too complex. I guess if you are studying a general theme in your class you could maybe work that in somehow too.
kids love taking photos of themselves.. I do an expression board with the kids.. get them to take photos of their friend with different emotions.. and then laminate them. they can then make a matching game - or an opposite game. etc.
do a scavenger hunt with the camera, give them a list they have to take photos of.
write a book and use photos the children have taken as the illustrations.
make a movie using photos...
time lapse... get the kids to go outside .. have someone outline their shadows, and note the time, take photo of the outline... then do this a number of different times over the day, to see how the sun changes the shape of a shadow...
same subject over the course of the year in different seasons..
we have been taking photos of a pumpkin growing , the kids have been enjoying seeing it grow and looking at the photos of it.
printing off pictures in black and white that the kids have taken and then getting them to paint them with water colors..
making a full image out of different photos of everyones body parts.
got so many more ideas but my brain is fried at the moment.
How about a yearbook of sorts? A story book, like Greg the Duck? An about me book, where they take photos of stuff they have, and people around them. You could also do a scrapbook style, where they cut photos out of magazines, and paste them. Can teach them POV and DOF. Maybe do that as a beginning, so they understand what a photo is. Wish I did stuff like this in 3rd grade!
