Most influential artists

October 5th, 2011
So, I've been wondering recently...what is everyones favorite or most influential artist when it comes to photography. I want to know who you draw inspiration from or who's work amazes you. Mine would have to be Bill Henson, I love his subject matter and how his works push boundaries. I also like a fair bit of Annie Leibovitz work. I recently attended her show in Sydney and she has some amazing works. But yes, please do share your favorites and what it is about them that you like so much. Maybe link us to a photo of yours that was inspired directly by one of their works!

Having not explored the world of phtoography much, I am somewhat limited.

However, I do greatly admire the late, great Frank Hurley for the efforts he went to in order to get 'that' shot, as well as his pioneering work on post-processing.

I also admire the not-so-late Deb Mayne @debmayne for her beautiful view of the world. I have tried to emulate her so many times...

Wow Timbo, you have totally blown me away with that massive compliment! :0)

I have a few artists who have inspired me. As I am a massive fan of B&W, along with candid and of course landscapes I draw from the following: Max Dupain my fave Australian artist that got my attention at the age of 15.
Annie Leibovitz is another, again, she caughty my eye around the same time.
Ansel Adams for his landscapes, the list can go on! I also like the more contemporary Ken Duncan and Steve Parish for their simplistic lines and colours in their panoramic landscapes.

my influences are all musicians, so I don't have much to add here. Some of my selfies have been influenced by particular songs.... oh well oh well oh well.

Ansel Adams, without a doubt. His work with B&W landscapes is magnificent. I also like David Lynch, the movie director. He has a way of creating surreal moods in his pictures.

@alk1991 - Great to hear! Not sure if you're familiar with Frank Hurley - as he was less art-y and more documnetary. He was an Australian photographer in the first half of the 20th Century who participated in Shackleton's Antartic exploration, toured through the remote highlands of Papua New guinea (he was frequently the first white man encountered in some areas) and photographed Australia's army in the Middle East and on the Western Front during WW1. He was quite controversial as a war phottographer, as he created montages to show conditions in battle, rather than single images. He also used massive reenactments in some cases, often with hundreds of soldiers and horses at a time.
