When to watermark?

For you professionals I have a quick question. I have recently done a photoshoot with my cheer team and I was going to gift the portraits to their parents. Should I watermark the photos or no? When you sell portraits do you normally place your watermark on them? I want to appear professional and hope that this will create other opportunities for me.

Thanks for you time!

I would say no to the watermark if you're gifting them. Usually watermark is for the "proofs" so people purchase the prints and don't use them somewhere else. I use the watermark online because it's easy to steal images from the web (of course it doesn't help 100% I'm sure)! If you'd want to print out business cards in case they'd like to book you for photos for them, you can do that!

This is what I do: I watermark every digital image. On the computer, website, e mail, jpeg, etc... If it's an actual print that you're handing over, no watermark.

Depending on where you have them printed, you can print your copyright info on the back of the print. Copyright protection is the purpose of the watermark, after all.

And please, do not degrade your images by having them printed at walmart, SAMs, walgreens, or any place like that. I've done comparison printing, and it's really worth it to use a good printer. I usually use mpix.com

@jenni3lynn For me, if you're giving them as gifts you can watermark them but do it with discretion and use your website if you have one to generate possible future business. But if selling them, don't watermark as they're paid for. Hope this helps =)
