I went to an Art show, and one of the photographers had his photo just mounted on a thin black board, with a little beveled edge. It wasn't foam, something hard. I liked the way it looked. Is there companies that will mount your photos on something like this?
I want to get away from mats and glass. I like the canvas prints, but this was much cleaner looking then canvas.
I have a friend who puts his photos on wood. You would never know that they weren't part of the wood....it's crazy. So, I went to my local craft store and found some stuff that would allow me to do this. I'm going to give it a try soon. I'll let you know how it goes, the name of the product, and all that good stuff. Really neat, unique way of showing your work, that's for sure.
I remember dry mounting my photos in college on illustration board. Is this what you mean? There were ahdesive sheets and a press board. Perhaps a frame shop could do this for you? I like this idea for display.
You can get both black and white core foam, with self-adhesive backing. All you need then is a texturizer / cold laminator. A fair bit lighter (and cheaper) than board.
I used to have poster sized photos done like this 25 years ago. Basically they were glued to MDF, the edges bevelled and then painted black. Those same photos are still in perfect condition today... of course they were proper photos...i.e. enlarged from negs... (even though I hide them behind the piano).
Here is the direct link to the video I mentioned.
If you are going to colour the edges (it does look better) I use a thick felt pen, and do it before you mount the photo.
With the canvas I found no problem if i placed it in the wrong place and had to remove it, but with glossy paper it buckles if you have to replace it.
Sorry, looks like I forgot to paste the link.
I will do it later
There is a video somewhere at
http://www.marrutt.com/
Both with canvas and other papers.
If you use paper especially glossy, you will need to covet the paper before trying to press the paper to the board because you will scratch it.
I will try to find the full link.
As for archival properties I would say that whatever is used to bind the board will eventually affect the print.
