And people thought I was crazy...

I've been putting tape on my lenses to make them unique and offer some protection, and people cried bloody murder about how I was "ruining" my lenses (somehow). Well, here ya go, a "real" product!

Unfortunately they seem a bit hard to order and obtain... otherwise I'd order one for my 18-200...

Said bloody murder done to my lenses (crude, I know...):

Who cares what you do with your equipment? If they aren't buying it from you, then no one should even blink an eye. They are just simpletons who can't think outside the box! I bet they are fighting for space in the line to buy them though, just because they are the "right" way and cost $$, therefore they are superior. Joke is on them!

@shadesofgrey Oh, I know. I do what I want, haha. It's just funny I stumbled across a company that actually makes nice laser cut vinyl for lenses. I want to get one because it's a lot nicer than my duct tape (doesn't conform to curves well).

I saw something on Facebook from BorrowLenses.com where they showed a pic of some lenses they got back that were covered in camoflauge duct tape and the people who rented them used them for birding. Ha!

I know quite a few people who uglify their camera gear to make it less attractive to thieves http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2009/05/deter-thieves-by-uglifying-your-camera/ .

Totally planning on taking a magic marker to the red ring when I buy L series lenses.

@neda Coloring it black? I once thought about silver Sharpie to various things on my lenses, but then didn't have the motivation. My Holga is painted with nail polish, however.

@hmgphotos Yep, figured anyone that knows what the red line on an L series means might get itchy fingers, and the more I can remove temptation the better. Won't do any good for the white ones, but for standard black it would. It is a good idea for when you've got a group of photogs around together and stuff might get misplaced.

You keep covering up the fact that there's a big old crack under the tape. ;-) Or that the threads have been stripped, and tape holds it all together. I would be worried about the stickiness factor of duck tape. Either from lots of use and wear, or heat that deteriorates the tape or leaves residue on the lens. But interesting way to differentiate your lenses.

well, the tape doesn't interfere with their function, so why not? I kinda like the idea and I always approve of anything purple. makes me want to go out and by some purple tape...

As long as the tape does not interfere with the picture, it's a fantastic idea!

They make big wide rubber bands to secure shoelaces for sports. I use them to hold my broken lens hood on. Works like a charm! Something colorful would be nice though!

I was in a grouchy mood last night when I wrote that! I still stand by it, though. Meant it to be a commentary on how some people think outside the box and others will be sheep!

@jeancarl LOL, my lenses are mint! I put painter's masking tape down before the duct tape so it's easier to remove. I thought ahead :)

@msk1p2 They use to make purple painter's masking tape, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I went with duct with a layer of blue. Maybe you'd have better luck :) I do think that once this lensskins company makes ordering a bit easier I'll spring for a treat and get a skin for my 18-200

so... wait... you're not crazy?
October 19th, 2011
@hmgphotos painter's tape. Great idea! And it's hidden underneath.

@grecican Nope, it's completely normal to cover a $1200 lens in duct tape :) At least in my world!
