Cell Phone Stories

October 24th, 2011
I'm compelled to start this thread after receiving a brilliant suggestion by @mebswartz.

Post a picture of your cell phone, and tell us its story.

I'll get us started. The story is copied directly from my album.

Blackberry of Doom

This is my cell phone.

I received it when I first arrived in Bangalore in September 2009. I had to return to America at the end of October to get a new visa, and somewhere the mix I managed to lose the case, and never felt much like replacing it since.

After being dropped, the ball-thing in the middle was secured with paper and packing tape, and was ultimately replaced for free when I found a spare part at a repair shop in Sri Lanka.

This phone has visited ten countries with me. It has made calls to Tanzania. I estimate it has sent close to 100,000 text messages. It has used both an Indian and an American SIM card.

The "RASCAL" sticker was given to me by Rayana, made from a label printer in Sheelpa's office. I only use their names because they're both pictured elsewhere in my album. "Rascal" is apparently an Indian insult, but I always thought it was hilarious.

People ask me why I don't get a new phone, and I usually say because it still works, but that's because I can't really say all of the above so quickly or coherently.

Glad to see you getting this started. I'm looking forward to reading the journeys these indispensable pieces of technological genius (thank you, Mr. Jobs, et al) have had.

I was given this phone Christmas 2006, making it 5 years old.
I've had it the whole way through my high school life, and I'm in no hurry to get rid of it, haha
Psh, who needs a phone with a touch screen, camera, or even bluetooth? I sure don't ;)

It has been thrown down on the pavement, left at the top of Mt. Skiddaw in Wales, dropped in the bath, I once stood on it, and one of the buttons got pushed in, so I had to make do without a 'down' button, then a couple months later, I stood on it again, and somehow managed to fix the button.

It is also identical to the phones of my mum and sister :)

I love my old Nokia, haha :)

Oh I wish I had a shot of my much maligned (my friends used to laugh about the fact that when I forgot it places, nobody even bothered to steal it - it was always right in the same place when I came back to get it) but well loved Motorolla "shoe phone" that I refused to upgrade until circumstances forced me to. Half the buttons didn't work, and the antenae had completely broken off, and the screen was illegible, but it had the best reception of any phone I've had before or since. I do love my new iPhone though:)

It is my old phone, and thank goodness apple will exchange this if you have a case and protective screen and look cute.

So after a kick $%^ hike that was all uphill and then scrambling over excessively large boulders and then getting back down, I was so proud of myself for not falling or getting hurt at all and having the hip survive. Well this photo happened as I was sitting on the edge of my trunk (boot) of my car changing shoes. Seems my backpack fell over and my phone dropped out onto the edge of the rock in the parking lot. UGH, just going to sync it on up and keep it going until the glass falls off or they come out with the 5. At least the camera still works.

Was initiated into the smartphone world with a blackberry 2 years ago, before Telus offered the iPhone. But really, I always wanted the iPhone. Finally crossed over to the "i" side this fall and could not be happier!
It does not yet have a long, storied history but I sure hope it will. Bought a bumper case for it within the first week after scaring myself, dropping it onto an asphalt parking lot surface on like day 2 of ownership ... eek!

I bought this a few weeks ago to replace my old trustworthy 7 year old phone (no camera, no Aps, just text-ting and well the ability to call someone) . It's great because I'll always have a camera in my pocket... but the downfall is it got me a bit hooked on Wordfeud
