Video and DSLR

I'm hoping to get a new camera in the near future and I'm already invested in Canon so I'm sticking that route. Probably the T3i unless something new comes out soon.

When it comes to video with a DSLR, is there anything I would be giving up? I have a Canon HF200 video camera that I rarely use since video really isn't my thing, due to the time it takes to edit and compile, but sometimes it would be nice. Would a T3i be able to do all of the major functions of a dedicated video camera? I keep hearing mixed things about focusing while doing video, but it might just be the terminology of "focus follow" that I don't understand.

Could I fund part of my T3i by selling the HF200, or would I be giving up too much for general around the house shooting?

At present, DSLRs are not replacements for video cameras. They have advantages and disadvantages.
This page gives a good overview.

There is also the problem of heat build up, which can shut down recording, typically after about 15 min. Your recording time is limited by you card size as well. And most DSLRs have limited autofocus capability in video mode.

While the DSLR can be used, I've never had much success with the T1i recording video. Getting the right focus on the screen can be hard as you have to manually focus.

I agree with @lilbudhha that the video recorder and the DSLR are two different beasts built for one purpose.
