Canon 5D Mark II or 7D

So Santa is bringing me a new camera for Xmas (turns out I have been good) but I'm a bit torn as what to buy. I like the fast 8fps, built in flash (lame I know) and weight of the 7D but I would like the full frame censor of the 5D to get the true effect of my fish eye and wide angle lens. Both appeal to me for different reasons but am happy if anyone out there with either of these cameras can give me some pros and cons.

Disregarding the sensor, the 7d is the winner. Benefits from being a newer design. Better AF for example. However, the sensor is a HUGE advantage with the 5d. Not only the better use of wide angle, but lower noise. Really depends on what you shoot, more action/sports, 7d. Landscape, cityscape, indoor no flash 5d.
Really, though, wait for the 1dx. Only a small bit of extra cost. What is a few thousand, here or there?

I agree with @lilbudhha, but if you are a portrait photog(like me) you want the full sensor, so I would go with the 5d...of course a 1dx is a dream, but not available for everyone:)

If you can afford it, go full frame.

I love my 7D. The 8fps is great for action photography as well as just 3 or 4 bursts to make sure you have at least one thats in perfect focus if you're handheld, along with better AF (19 point). The built in flash is ok but it's nothing great, more of a last resort back-up, so either way I'd get an external flash.

I used to do videography before I traded my Z1U for my 7D and since these DSLR's are popular with the video scene now the 5D is better with the full sensor because it's comparable with the Red One. For photography it only has 3.7 fps and other photographers I've talked to that have the 7D say the 8fps was one of the breaking points when desiding between the two. Like you said though if you already have those lenses and they work better with full frame, along with less noise you'd get more out of them.

Like @lilbudhha said it all depends on what you're using it for. For general photography my 7D has been an amazing camera.

I love my 5DII and I've been very happy with action shots for sports and birds in flight the 3.9 fps has been more than enough for my needs. http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II-vs-Canon_EOS_7D does give a bit of a comparison of the two

I am leaning towards the 7D as I take more bird/ action shots but I like landscapes too - not so much portraits. The built in flash is a bonus as I have kids and I dont want to miss random moments because Im busy putting strobes on etc...

@lilbudhha the Canon 1Dx looks awesome too but Im afraid Santa might suffer chest pains if I get one of those!

@lbmcshutter handy info but still leaves me undecided! Why dont they make a 7D with a full frame that would fix all my problems...all for the same price too.

But thankyou all for you feedback.

Love my 5D II, and have used it extensively for sports and kids (including my own) - without flash.

That said, the 7D is cheaper, and the AF system is great for tracking. The 5D II AF is nowhere near as good, true, but it is still ten times better than my FM-3 of only 5 years ago, or my F100 for that matter. I only use the centre AF point anyway, so 9, 45, 61.... doesn't mean anything to me.

Now, I do have to wonder why, unless someone specifically shoots fast-paced sports every day, someone needs 8FPS as opposed to 4FPS. There certainly are moments when faster is better, but for most people, most of the time, it just means you need bigger memory cards to store all the photos you're never going to use anyway, and also that you'll be sorting through 20 photos looking for "the good one" as opposed to looking through "just 10 photos". You have to ask yourself if there's truly any benefit to you, in having a frame every 0.15 seconds as opposed to "only" every 0.25 seconds.

The 7D is a great all-purpose camera, and it does everything "pretty well". The 5D II is a landscape and portrait camera, in a body more easily luggable than the 1-series cameras, and has upsides and downsides - it is less of an all-rounder, and more specialised. Either way, you get a great camera.

If you want a "full frame 7D" you could possibly look at Nikon..... but then you'd be one of "those" people. ;)
