Upgrade from T1i

November 23rd, 2011
So right now I shoot with a T1i and really love it. I bought it 3 years ago as a entry-level, am I going to actually enjoy photography camera. I have found out that I now love photography and my questions are 1) Would it be worth upgrading to a better camera or should the majority of my cash go to glass? 2) What model would be considered a good "next step" if I did go up? The 7D? I really want a Mark ii eventually but honestly not sure I need so much camera yet as I am still learning but very much engrossed.

As for the types of photography I enjoy taking, I honestly enjoy just about everything. I really like a lot of night photography and absolutely love a very small depth of field. Trying to get into taking street photography candids and whatnot but I am still getting over my initial apprehensions of snapping strangers pictures.

Thanks so much in advance for all of the advice.

i would go with a markll- you may regret "settling" for a 7D if a mark ll is what you really want...it is not that big a price jump....(there is nothing wrong with the 7D- it is a fab camera, but the full sensor gives the 5D the edge and if you are contemplating it at all, the 7D is not going to give you that, no matter how fab it is)

If you can afford a full frame sensor camera like the mark, then definitely go that direction. If you're looking to save some money, but still want a camera you can grow with, the 7D is an excellent choice at a more affordable price. Many pros shoot with 7D's.

The next step up from your T1i is the T2i which is just a "baby" 7D, same sensors meaning same quality photos/video just less features, it depends on how much control over your camera you want. I love my 7D, its great for general purpose photography and has the 8fps which, like I said on another post, is great for action photography or just taking a quick 3 or 4 burst to assure perfect focus (19 point focus) when using handheld. The 5D has a full frame sensor so less noise and better with certain lenses. Honestly the 5D is a great camera but for the money think about how much camera you want and what you'll be using it for. If you're just a hobbiest then my opinion is go with the T2i or the 7D and use the money you'd save from the 5D on a good lens, you'd get more out of it.

I think you would see a better bang for your buck with lenses over buying a new body, but that depends on what lenses you already shoot with. If you are already shooting with high quality L glass then I would say upgrade your body. There are some incredibly sharp prime canon lenses for relatively cheap. The best value versus quality is the 50mm f/1.8 but if you've been shooting for a while, I'm sure you are already aware of this lens if not own one. 2 other very sharp lenses are the 85mm f/1.8 and the 100mm f/2.8 macro. If you want to get into L quality glass then the 2 best value lenses are the 70-200mm F/4 and the 17-40mm f/4, both offer superb sharpness and color. If you do go with a new body I would go with the 7D, the 19 point AF system and the dual DIGIC IV processors produces a high quality image.
