Canon Power Shot G12

December 2nd, 2011
I am just wondering if someone here in this beautiful community has this camera so I could check out some of the pics.
I saw this camera today and feel in love with it. Usually I use my Canon EOS 550D but I feel the need to have a small pocket camera, point and shoot, that I can just easily pack in the purse for everyday rotine.

Anybody?

Thanks ;)

@carrapeta00 I have it and love it. Never had a DSLR (I want to get one after I finish 365), so I cannot give you comparisons. I'm trying to learn some basics with it.

I know @alia_801 uses it as well; maybe there are also other users

My photo that made today's Top 20 was taken on my beloved G12!!

Canon Powershot S100 makes more sense, it's more compact but with the same sensor and a better lens.

@vikdaddy - but no viewfinder.

My current carry-everyday camera is a Canon SX210IS and I've wanted to upgrade it to something better for ages. I like the size and weight of the S95 and am still thinking about getting the S100 but I hate not having a viewfinder and am leaning towards a G12 (or G13 if such a thing is ever released). The OP may feel the same way.

I'm so happy with it!!! I had the A640 before - also with the variable angle screen and once you've had one....it's a must have. Small enough to fit in your bag and big enough to have all the bells and whistles. Please feel free to look at my pics. I'm still learning all the features.

Got to top 20 with this camera - this pic:

I bought one a few months ago for the same reason as you. I don't use it too much but probably will more over winter. Here are a couple of pics I took with it.

Thanks @woot :)
We've got a G12.
Pros: lots of modes, manual focus option, excellent macro options, pretty resilient (survives my parrot launching at it and biting it regularly!), battery lasts well, extension tubes and filters available, screen angle can be set to almost anything.

Cons: a little heavy to carry around, flash isn't very powerful or well placed for macro shots, pretty slow to focus and shoot.

Most of my shots this year are on it, so feel free to check out my project - a few below:

'normal' range (processed)

Super camera.Small and light but packed with features and very good for HDR work too. I use mine almost as much as my 50D -)))

@vikdaddy ,

I have also thought and seen this camera but was bit disappointed with the limited controling buttons which does not lack on the G12. I know it is small but I find it hard to manipulate the shots when you do wanna keep them on manual mode. Do you have this one?

Thanks for the reply ;) Much appreciated.

@vikdaddy @jools,

yes, and there is also this disadvantage of no viewfinder.

@jools ,

I actually came across this camera checking out a list of the top 10 point and shoot cameras.

@alia_801 ,

thanks for the reply... I vote on your first pic for the theme-pattern.

Some of the cons are not really a problem for me... being used to carrying my EOS and lens aroung which is prettey much about 10 pounds the G12 will be like a feather. I donĀ“t really use much of the flash, and if I have to will problably get the EOS.
I am though a bit puzzled of the macro quality... do you mean the flash is not appropriate for macro shooting or macro overall is not really good quality?

@flyden ,

that is a fantastic pic... I do a lot of HDR lately... so do you think this camera makes good quality hdr?

what about the function of miniature... do you use that at all?

@carrapeta00 I tend not to use the inbuilt HDR camera function so much, but use its bracketing coupled fast continuous shooting - then pull the exposures together in Photomatix and/or PS. Similar with Minaturisation - although this function works very well, I still tend to use PS more.

@flyden ,

thanks for the reply... what program is this PS?

@carrapeta00 Photoshop. I use CS5 but the recently released Elements 10 is available at much more reasonable cost and covers most functions. http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements.html
