Privately message

December 5th, 2011
I sometimes wish there was a way to privately message someone on this site like you can in Facebook. Short of putting your email address in a post or on your profile, there's no way to do it and I'm not sure I would want that information public. Anyone else see a benefit if we were able to do that??

Yeah it would be so much easier to flirt, I mean ask more specific questions about photos ;-)

@johnnyfrs - LOL! That wouldn't be the purpose. Silly!!! Thanks for the chuckle, though.

just have a work/business/public email address. They're free to start up and you can give it out anywhere, anytime. I have an admin@ address for my website and I throw it around. If you have private message facility it makes more work for Ross when sleezy old guys start telling teens how pretty they are.

what if you want to tell ROSS how pretty he is??? :)

@debsphotos : I agree, there were many occasions I would have loved to pm someone...

@chewyteeth -That's an idea.

@shadowdancer - Thanks.

@toast I think that is why there is no pm service. Ross got tired of people constantly telling him how pretty he is.

I think I would enjoy sending myself a PM telling me how pretty I am.

@toast LOL! This has been brought up beforef (by myself among others) and the consensus seems to be that it would make the community atmosphere lessen. While I agree that it would be nice to pm someone from time to time, I also think that it would take away from the experience on here. Ross has worked hard to make this a place where everyone feels welcome. If you want to ask technical questions, I'm sure that a simple request on the photo would suffice. Most people on here are more than happy to let you get a peek behind the curtain. If it's for more personal reasons, you could find a photo way back in their album and post a message there...you and they can then delete it after they write down your email address or other info. Not completely private but the chances of someone seeing it lessen significantly. A quick here's my email addy, followed by a short why and lets sort it out through email might be enough. I know that hushmail.com has free accounts and the account inactivates after 3 weeks of no use. I set up an account there specifically for use on here if I want to contact someone or someone asks to contact me. I don't give out my personal address for various reasons. Definitely not coming down on you or this idea, I just think it wouldn't add to the community here! I was in the other camp until some others made the argument for not pm'ing. :)

I think it would be a nice option......maybe someday

@shadesofgrey - I understand your view and thanks for posting it. I would think just the opposite...it would increase a sense of community. And I wasn't thinking of it just to barrage someone with technical questions. And, along with the ability to pm someone would have to be the ability to block someone, too, in case they use the ability for the wrong purpose.

I am new here, but fairly up on forum software, is Ross the only admin here?
December 5th, 2011
Yes. So many times I have wanted to ask specific questions or just make a personal comment. But without a private message button it is hard to do those things. I don't believe all things should go in comments and discussions. I try to find the people on other sites like flickr or facebook where I have the ability to PM.
It would be nice to see something like that on this site.
December 5th, 2011
@billbetten Yes - this is Ross's business.

@eleanor Thanks for the response,,,,,,I am using a iPad & Android to navigate/upload the site while on the road. This is a great group of people who share the common passion, it seems somewhat difficult to communicate with other members, but I am learning so much by reading posts, comments, etc. Not a complaint, but rather a comment :)
