Step up or step down?

December 8th, 2011
I just need a quick answer to a problem which is confusing me: I want to buy a 50mm lens after hearing so many positive things about it. The problem is that Canon only sells 50mm lenses with a 52mm diameter but my camera has 58mm. So I went looking for adapters and there are step-down or step-up adapters and as I understand it, I need a step-down adapter because I want to decrease the size of diameter. But I keep getting confused from which perspective these are seen. Could someone help me? Also it would be nice to know if anyone has experience with adapter rings, if they work without problems and which manufacturer I should choose (Leinox, Phorex, Siolex or Hama which is the only one I know but has the worst ratings). Thanx a lot in advance!

I'm confused - are you talking about filters, or lens mounts?

You're confusing me! The 50mm f/1.8 has a 52mm filter diameter, as compared to the 58mm diameter on the 18-55mm kit lens. This just means that you'll need to get different filters (UV, CPL, ND, etc.) to fit your 50mm.

The EF mount will fit any Canon EOS camera -- so, it will fit your 1000D perfectly.

Is that what you mean?

You have a Canon EOS1000 D right ? Any Canon EF or EF-S lens will fit to it without any additional stuff. 50mm lens is EF type. However, your 58mm lens cap from your kit lens is too big for the 50mm lens :)

Oh, duh! I now know what my problem was! I went shopping for a filter this weekend and had to get a 58mm one - that number stuck in my head even though it had nothing to do with the diameter of my camera as @janmaki and @gurry just pointed out. Sometimes I can be so embarassingly stupid. Thanx for your help, guys, and sorry for proving the old stereotype of women and technical stuff right - the only excuse I have is that for the first time in my life I am actually getting into technical stuff without being afraid of it which - unfortunately - doesn't change my lack of knack for it.... going into a corner for self-bashing now.

I wouldn't worry, I only just discovered how to manually focus my lens. I'd been under the misapprehension you did it by rotating the barrelly bit that's actually the zooming thingy...

@rich57 : That makes me feel much better - thank you :))!
