Would you pay £2.7m for this photo?

December 22nd, 2011

Rhine II by Andreas Gursky sold for $4.3m (£2.7m) at Christie's in New York, setting a record for any photograph sold at auction

Didn't think so.
Me? Nah.

Never the less, also click on the eye witness collection for some fabulous photos from past 100 days or so from around the world.
December 22nd, 2011
Yeah, sorry to admit I did... Was prepared to go to £3m but no more...

Seriously tho mate.. that shot is AWESOME....wow, just wow.!!!!!
December 22nd, 2011
Seriously? It's crap to my eyes. Sorry!
December 22nd, 2011
@minxymissk I've money to burn :-)
December 22nd, 2011
Oh, I am SO AMAZED... the amount of grass in the shot is just astounding!!! I don't understand why it didn't go for EVEN MORE!!!

</sarcasm>

December 22nd, 2011
What the hell, it hasn't even got any "Bokeh" in it
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l That is amazing! @jasehoad Or Bouquet.... ;)
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l yeah, does look a bit fake but prob not... should of set the shutter speed a bit higher tho and changed the f-stop for more bokeh effect on the background, other than that, ok I suppose and one I might consider using as a stock photo... :-)
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l No I wouldn't but then I wouldn't pay $100 for acid washed pre-torn designer jeans either. Apparently someone thought it was worth that much but for me- I don't think I'd even spend $43 on it.
December 22nd, 2011
Like when this shot came up before, a couple of months ago or so, I feel like the lone liker of this photo. :) I love minimalism though. Now, as to what I'd pay for it, well, yeah.
December 22nd, 2011
Minimalism ok, but crazy though to be valued so highly.
How about this by @fueast, available free to all us 365ers!
December 22nd, 2011
"NOPE" Seen way better shots right here on 365 by many people.
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 Are you basically saying you're given the permission for everyone to use @fueast 's picture?????
December 22nd, 2011
@jasehoad I know, really bad ah. I wonder if anyone has written a book on it though.
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l lol, that is awesome!!!
December 22nd, 2011
well not exactly, but she probably wouldn't mind if you asked her nicely
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 ;-) I kid I kid , I joke I joke....

@pocketmouse what ? You never know...someone may have done.

***smirks.
December 22nd, 2011
@beautifulthing Yea I hear, simplistic is good. Not not this good, any one of could have taken it and pocketed a fortune :)
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l LOL - that's the dream, isn't it? :)
December 22nd, 2011
I know mate!
December 22nd, 2011
i'd pay a dollar for it to wipe my ass with if i'm in a spot i need to wipe my ass and don't have any toilet paper handy
December 22nd, 2011
@grecican hahaha
December 22nd, 2011
@grecican somehow I wouldn't think it'd be very absorbent, maybe if it was printed on canvas.....
December 22nd, 2011
It must be SOOC to be worth that much.
December 22nd, 2011
Looks awfully as if it was shot out the window of a car.
December 22nd, 2011
Gurksy describes Rhine II: "It says a lot using the most minimal means … for me it is an allegorical picture about the meaning of life and how things are." . Suddenly, @grecican grabs the pic & wipes her ass with it. Now that would be an allegorical picture about meaning of life... :)
December 22nd, 2011
you know azz, I didnt want to spoil it for you but yeah it was me that bought it... I was going to bring it to our next london 365 meet :P
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 No wait - I was offering a discount but it wasn't going for free! Actually - after chasing down a version of this theme I realised how difficult it is around here to get perfectly straight lines. Maybe there was more to the original composition than you think....
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 @azza_l You can have the version with the swan for free. It looses the minimalism.
December 22nd, 2011
I have sold at least 3 photos for more then this one but I guess because I sold them on Ebay and not Christies.. no one cares. Oh well, sucks to be this guy!
December 22nd, 2011
Now I've seen the picture and read about it, I am amazed to find that actually this isn't the picture he took! He didn't find a landscape that reflected how he felt, blah blah, he digitally removed the things he didn't like until the photo suited his purpose......I'm going for Alison's @fueast every time!
December 22nd, 2011
@Cherrill Damn why didn't I think to remove those electricity poles and straighten the slope a little bit.
December 22nd, 2011
@toast I'll look out for it ;-)

@fueast I would of thought this is limited edition ! Tho I know what you mean straight lines and may be finding them but still....that much money.

@janmaki @grecican I don't think christies allow that sort if behaviour

@moonpig I heard it SOOC only !

@bobfoto You'd get more of down a car boot sale!

@swilde Youre right it does ! Rather crisp though for a moving car :)
December 22nd, 2011
@azza_l - it was a weekday... But on a Sunday, they're all available from the rear of my boot!
December 22nd, 2011
Um, no. But I can't think of anything I would pay that much for. Maybe world peace if I had the option...and the money.
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 Aw, come on, Richard! Start the bidding! (:
December 22nd, 2011
@fueast @clarissajohal Ok. I'll start the bidding with the offer of a pint of lager or beer in the local pub tonight. I'll chuck in a packet of peanuts if it's comes in a frame.
December 22nd, 2011
That photo is technically well executed but nothing more...
December 22nd, 2011
@rich57 Frames cost more than a bag of peanuts! What about 2 pints if I throw in my latest?
December 22nd, 2011
Looks kinda like my back-garden ;-)

And if I had only taken a few steps to either the left or right side (and there wouldn't have been so many geese....)

I wouldn't have paid it... I just look out of one of my windows ;-)
December 22nd, 2011
nope
December 22nd, 2011
Is that a joke, it's just the river???With nothing there...and the scary thing is he can just print off a heap more...i wouldn't pay $2.70
December 22nd, 2011
no. not at all.
December 23rd, 2011
This clearly has more to do with name than talent. I'd like to be witty about it but at the moment I am just despondent. At least someone is making big bucks around the holidays.....oh wait, it's the person who already HAS big bucks. Someone's holidays just got brighter!
December 23rd, 2011
@elke these are great photos!
December 23rd, 2011
It's of no meaning at all. £2.7 million....if I had that money and wanted to blow it on a photo of the Rhine I'd go there with my favourite photographer, I'd buy him a Canon EOS 7D and I'd get my favourite supermodel, say...Hattie Watson, to splash round in the Rhine in her birthday suit on a sunny day while my aforementioned favourite photographer snapped away. It would still come in at less than that so who'd buy such an impersonal and drab photo when that amount of money would take you to the moon and back?
December 23rd, 2011
I'mma start taking minimalist photos and selling them for absurd prices. tell a rich person you're selling it for 1.2 million and he'll find a reason to buy it just cause it's expensive.
December 23rd, 2011
@gypsylady That might be a good way to do it. Perhaps the starting price was high so that people thought it could only be a brilliant work :-)

At least for the price the horizon is straight :-0
December 24th, 2011
@fueast hee hee cute try... I love your picture but the expensive one is stripes.
December 24th, 2011
i wouldn't pay £2.70p for it lol or 27p for that matter
December 24th, 2011
Safe to say then No :)
December 24th, 2011
That is crazy! As a matter of fact, I recently went to an art festival and said to my husband, "I see better photographs on 365 than I do from these artists!" I couldn't believe the prices people were asking for, in my opinion, for mediocre photographs.
December 24th, 2011
No, I've seen so many better shots here on 365... Thats so ridiculous, its a good picture don't get me wrong... but not worth that much
December 24th, 2011
@janmaki LOL
