alright so i have gone a year and a half without it... and now im going to finally look into getting one! An external flash for my rebel 2ti. And i would like to know.. what do other 365ers use?? Do you have any recommendations for me for a starter flash?? I have no idea what to look for in a flash! Someone please help me :)
I haven't used it yet and it is Olympus Kit, but I would say Canon makes something similar but Santa just came up with the goods and I scored a Ring Flash. Will let you know how it goes for my macro stuff.
I've the Canon 580 EX. It functions OK with my camera. It is a little inconsistent with the metering. Could be my ancient 1D Mark II at fault, but I think I have heard others mention this as well.
Not sure what you mean by "starter" flash, though.
@lilbudhha I guess I shouldn't have said starter, I was at a lack of words.. But something that's not overly pricey, like on the cheaper side of flashes. I know you get what you pay for but I'm sure there's a standard price flash that would be good
If you plan on using it as an off-camera flash, then I suggest saving a lot of money and purchase a YN-560. If you want an on-camera flash with TTL (i.e. automatic settings) then I suggest a Canon 430ex. If money is not a problem, then get the 580ex. But rumor is that Canon will be announcing some new flashes at the beginning of the year, so that brings me back to suggesting the inexpensive YN-560 http://www.amazon.com/Yongnuo-YN-560-Speedlight-Flash-Canon/dp/B004GZLFHM
@jinximages@sjodell@kimmiesue thanks guys for all the help! i was thinking of buying my flash on boxing day! @onarom how reliable do you think these rumors are? im not in a rush to buy, but i was thinking of getting something on boxing day but now i may wait.
Honestly I suggest ebay and getting an older one with ETTL, so you can $50 and not $500+ and learn manual. To me, manual was easier to learn and has benefited me way better. I have the 580exII, but I have a couple cheap speedlites from other brands as well and while they aren't as powerful, they are good and reliable.
I have a 430ex as I usually shoot with as much natural light as I can, but when I do need the external flash, it has never let me down. It's awesome! I think it's probably the cheapest one out there and someday, when it crashes, I will upgrade, but depending on what you need it for, it works out really well.
I think if you would need to rely on it on a regular basis or if you wanted to do OCF, then I would probably go with the 580 just so you have all that you need. The 430 is capable of OCF as well, but with a little more work than the 580, as I understand.

They are rumored to be testing a new line of 3 flashes. A new 580, new 430 and another unknown flash. Hope this helps
