External Hard Drive Present

December 26th, 2011
I got a Seagate external hard drive 1 TB as a Christmas present. I started downloading pics from my laptop last night. I could not believe how many I have it must be like a gazillion. I know this laptop will be happy when I'm done. Then on to the desktop to clean that up. Now I just need to get 1 more so I can backup the backup. Hope everyone had a great Christmas now on to the New Year.

That's my plan for the new year too! To archive all my photos!

@hollandcrew you are on the right track. I leaned my lesson after loosing two computers in a row to bad hard drives.. since then I have backed up on two 500gb drives. Two computers later I still have my photos. Now these are filling up, Im going to have to retire these and get a new pair..maybe two 2tb's...

External Drives are fantastic! Remember when a top end computer had an eighth of the memory of the card in our cameras? Heck, I remember when we ran the programs off the floppies because we didn't have enough room to load them on the machine.

If you're on a windows machine, Microsoft has a free app called SynchToy that helps keeps two folders in synch. So as you add new images to your laptop, run SynchToy, it will copy them across to your external drive. I find it really useful.

Not 100% sure, but I think external drives are not super reliable, possibly less reliable than normal internal drives. Make sure you do have a backup of your backup.

The only reason an external drive would be less reliable than an internal drive is that you're more likely to drop an external drive than you are your computer or laptop. Other than that, they'd be more reliable since it's the same thing as an internal drive, just in a different case, and you'd use it less than you would an internal drive.

Don't keep your backup and your second backup in the same location. Get it to a friend's house or a safe deposit box.
