Lens Err and New Lens Doubt

December 29th, 2011
Hi Guys,

I have a Canon T2i (550D) with 17-85 mm and a 50 mm prime lens. However now my 17-85mm has stopped working first with a lens err 01 at full zoom and now the viewfinder is dark. Has anyone faced this problem and how was it fixed ?

Also, I am thinking of buying a wide angle lens. Does anyone know any good , not too expensive lenses ?

Any help is much appreciated !

Thanks,
Saumya

I can't help with the error but I would highly recommend checking out Tamron and Sigma lens on Amazon. They are great lenses at about half the price of Nikon/Canon branded lenses.

I had that happen when I tried to use an old film lens on my camera, but I'm guessing you got your lenses with your camera.

Here's a good article on lenses. http://improvephotography.com/1400/the-top-16-most-outstanding-lenses-on-the-market/

Apart from removing the lens, cleaning the contacts and remounting, not sure.

As for wide angle, the Sigma 10-20mm is pretty popular.

Be careful with Sigma, Tokina, Tamron lenses. They make some good ones, but some are very poor. Don't bother with Amazon reviews, look at dpreview site for in depth reviews and tests.

The error code you are receiving is typically because the chip inside the lens that controls the aperture has failed. Typically, DSLR cameras will keep the aperture wide open to allow the most light possible to filter through the viewfinder until the moment you hit the shutter button. When you hit the shutter button, the camera tells the lens which aperture to use according to the settings you are using.

This error code means the aperture is no longer functional. Take the lens off the camera and look through it with your eye. Is the aperture probably as small as it can get? This is a common problem with variable aperture lenses in which your maximum aperture changes as you zoom out.

As for a wide angle lens, the best I've ever used is the Tokina 12-24mm f/4. Not as fast the the f/2.8 wide angle but at 1/3 the price I can't argue with the quality. I think I spent $400 to get mine new. This is by far a leader in the world of wide angle lenses and is in fact even better than the Nikon and Canon versions, which rarely happens from one of the Little Three.
