I have a friend looking to purchase a good point-and-shoot. She wants compactness yet good stabilization (her husband has had some health issues and is a little shaky). She paints pictures from photographs and will often enlarge print and enlargement of a picture to get details of eyes, etc. I don't know much about newer point and shoots. Last one I bought was quite some time ago. Can anyone make a recommendation? Anyone shooting with a Nikon Luminex? She wondered what Canon would model might be good and/or any other brands you recommend. Thanks so much!
I like mine. I think the photographs are good, not as good as those fancy camera's but the reviews are very good and I'm completely satisfied. I don't know if it's still available but there may be another comparable one. See my photo's & see if you think the quality is good enough. It have a good auto settings for those who like them as well as other settings which I am now learning.
I use a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 and I love it. My son is a photographer and he says its the best point and shoot he's ever used (whenever he uses mine). It is great in low light and has a powerful zoom.
I love my Panasonic DMC-TZ4, but I don't know if you can get it new anymore. It has a really nice anti-shake setting which has allowed me to take some pretty good photos from the back of the motorcycle while speeding down the road.
I'd recommend any of the latest Panasonic Lumix cameras. I think one model is DMC ZS 9 or something like that. I love my current Lumix which is an upgrade from an earlier model. Excellent zoom and very good low light capability without flash.
The Lumix TZ series is amazing. I'm using the TZ 8 but the newest is the 10 I think. The optical zoom, the macro function and the quality is great and you can choose shutter priority and aperture priority like in a DSLR. Here's an example of what it can do:
If you remember to push the button half-way to focus and then take the photo the stabilizer is quite good, too.
I have had two this last year. I love my little Casio, it is really good with stability I have taken pictures out of the back of a flying taxi and from the back of a horse and they are perfect. I had a Nikon Coolpix before that and I struggled with it in low light situations and with shakiness. For the money, the Casio has been worth it's weight in gold.
The latest Panasonic Lumix is the TZ20 but from what I read there aren't enough improvements from theTZ10 (that I have) to warrant the added expense. @jannaellen
The newest Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ is the 20. It's a brilliant little camera. I have slightly shaky hands and find its stabiliser works very well. And the other thing about it - very important imo - is that it's fun!
I've the Canon G12 and have used it for much of my project. Has image stabilization.
The controls can be manual or auto, the main controls are physical dials and buttons and I love the pivoting and rotating screen.
HA! I don't know what de EWWW factor is. :) AND thanks - someone else suggested the G12. I was hoping for a camera raw that was pocket size and the picture on line of the g12 looks big. But I guess I can go a little bigger for raw.
