Only day two and.....

January 3rd, 2012
Oh my gosh! So its only day two of my 365 project and a problem has come up! First off i went to upload my picture to my computer so i could upload it here and my memory card reader wasnt working or somthing? It just wouldnt show up, so i went to read my comments on my last picture and someone gave me a piece of advice so i went to go out to try it, so i put my memory card back in my camera and turned on my camera and itt said i had a memory card error!!

I really hope all my pictures are not deleted now for good! Does anyone know what to do about this?
Thanks!

What kind of memory card do you have? What kind of camera?

I have a SanDisk 8 GB memory card and just a point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital Elph. I think i am going to be looking into buying a new camera with my Christmas money, because this camera is pretty old.

sometimes the lock will get knocked into place... check to see if the card is in the locked position

@nikkers I checked. Not that :/ I think i figured it out though. I think i accidently formatted it when i tried to upload the picture, because it said that the card needed to be formatted to get the pictures or somthing.. Little did i know i guess that deletes all the pictures?

@purplepalooza .ouch,, I have done that , lost three days worth of holiday shots doing that..
there is software out there that can retrieve the photos. just dont take any more photos on that card..

I dont know what software is the best one.. there have been discussions on this subject before, but I cant remember..

but I googled and got some websites.. dont know how reliable they are though.
http://www.cardrecovery.com/
http://hetmanrecovery.com/
http://www.easeus.com/resource/memory-card-format-recovery.htm
http://www.remosoftware.com/memory-card-recovery

some are free and some you will pay for..

good luck..

there MIGHT be a chance the photos are still in the camera depending on the camera and card. either way, i would suggest getting a new card becaue it sounds like the card has been damaged.

A painful lesson many of us have learned! I try to upload my photos as soon after taking them as possible... and I try to keep them on at least 2 different computers and/or CDs and/or a separate hard drive. Good luck with the recovery software. I have a friend who was able to recover from a crashed computer, but I don't think he has had to try it on a card. Another suggestion I have read is that once you transfer your photos you should format your card inside your camera, rather than delete them using your computer... supposedly better for the card that way. Again, good luck... it's so hard to lose photos... kind of like losing a piece of yourself. :(

Even if you've formatted the card, the photos will still be on it - AS LONG AS you've not taken any more photos or used the card since. If this is the case one of these recovery sites should be able to sort it for you.

Are you sure your memory card reader can read 8gb? I had an old one reader that wouldn't and might have ruined a card in the process. I've had memory cards fail in readers and die, fortunately without pictures! I've learned never to trust memory cards to store my shots for more than a day or two.

This sorta touches on another thing (@marilyn mentioned) I know is very tempting with large memory cards. Don't wait to download your pictures off the card. If you are prone to leave pictures on the card for a while, like a whole month, and a read error happened, you could lose a month of photos. Is it worth that loss? So download them frequently!

To add to Jean's comment. I download mine daily. I have the option of pluggin a mini-usb cord into my camera and accessing right from the computer so I don't have to mess around with taking it out and forgetting to put it back in. Maybe an option for you? After I download them, I organize them into other folders based on my intentions for them, or delete them if they are crap photos. Never format your memory card from your computer, it could ruin it so your camera doesn't recognize it...just learned this little tid bit from @jasonbarnette the other day. Hopefully that isn't what happened to yours!

@marilyn Yes, i have defintally learned my lesson! I will not keep my pictures on my memory card for more than a day or two for now on! On the bright side though i got a new camera/memory card/cable today so i should have no more problems!

@sburbidge Okay ill try it somtime. although it wouldnt even let me take any pictures on the camera so im not really sure.

@jeancarl Yeah, i have used it many times before so im not sure why it didnt work.. And yes i now know to upload my pics right away!! I got a new camera and memory card today so i should be good now.. I am really happy with my new camera though!

@shadesofgrey Hmm intersting! Thank you, very helpful! Unfortuanlly i think that is what happened to me :/ On the bright side, today i got a new camera! So it came with all the cords and stuff so now im just going to use the cable it came with to hook it up to my computter. Because before i was only using a card reader because the camera was my moms old camera because she got a new one and her old one was better than mine but she didnt know where the cables or anything were.
