New artist challenge: Dolores Marat

September 22nd, 2024
Thanks so much to @ljmanning for hosting the last artist challenge on the work of Alan Schaller. It’s always an honor to have a photo recognized, and I’m thrilled to host the next edition of the challenge.

For this round, I’ve chosen the French photographer Dolorès Marat. I discovered her work at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2023, and I was immediately captivated by her photography. Marat’s images are characterized by a dreamlike quality, poetic use of color, light, and shadow. Her photos often feel cinematic and intimate, transporting the viewer into a different world.

Marat’s personal journey into photography is as fascinating as her work. Coming from a poor family, she is a self-taught photographer who worked for many years in a photo lab before finding her own artistic voice.

Marat shoots with a film camera, which adds a timeless and nostalgic quality to her work. A hallmark of her photography is the dominating color in each image, contributing to the moody, atmospheric feel that makes her work so emotionally compelling. Her photos often feel like vivid, fleeting memories, frozen in time yet alive with feeling.

Her website is currently “under construction” (she is not good at selling herself), but you can explore a series of her beautiful, dreamlike images in this Guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2023/aug/02/dolores-marat-dreamlike-colours-in-pictures

Additionally, you can follow her on Instagram to view more of her work https://www.instagram.com/doloresmarat

For further insights and analysis of her photography, this page ( http://tallisphotography.weebly.com/dolores-marat.html ) offers valuable context.

You can also explore her life and career on her Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolores_Marat and through this documentary film https://www.thedarkroomrumour.com/en/film/dolores-a-documentary-film-by-thomas-goupille-on-photographer-dolores-marat .

The challenge will run from today, 22 September through the 29 October. Please tag your images ac-marat . Photos must be taken during this period, and feel free to tag as many as you like. However, only one image per photographer can make the shortlist.

I hope you find inspiration in her work and look forward to seeing your submissions!
