Wheels- weekly theme

July 28th, 2011
Just for fun!
I don't see a discussion with this topic- sorry if there is. I wanted to talk about what a wheel is. For example, is a roller a wheel? Like a roller that helps slide something from one place to another. Does a winch or capstan have wheels (gearwheels)? The picture I submitted yesterday has several things which may or not be defined as wheels and that has sparked some interesting discussion.

There are actually 4 of the blue rollers that you see in the middle of the trailer but one is almost hidden.
Another thing I thought about when choosing a picture yesterday- does a track like on a bulldozer or back hoe have wheels inside it?

Thanks for opening up this topic... for my understanding, a WHEEL is a ring or disk that revolves or is turned by a central shaft or pin, sometimes with a central hub that has radiating spokes attached to a circular rim.
Like I've seen entrees this week that they get it correctly and others somewhat had a confusion about it.
Peace out! =)

@paulremulla
I have looked at a lot of definitions- some are very specific and some include a wider range of meaning. So, are the two cogged gears of the winch wheels? And is each side a separate wheel?

i haven't looked up any specific definitions, but i guess to me a wheel is something round that helps an object gain movement or momentum... so that's what i'm looking for with this theme :)

Pam,

I think part of the point of the challenge is to take a theme and run with what your idea and interpretation would be. It does not always have to be literal, but how you incorporate the word or feeling into your own photo. You are given the ability to think outside of the box with this one.

Also the person who came up with the theme added this. "Show us your wheels! Not limited to cars and bikes, so keep your eyes open - we are surrounded by them. Luggage bags with wheels, pushchairs, shopping carts, skateboards, water wheels, Ferris wheels, bicycles etc. Hope you enjoy this one!"

So as you can see, it is a broad definition that should not make you feel limited. A winch wheel is called a wheel and will be okay to be included.

@brumbe I agree! I like to widen the interpretation and look at things in different ways. That's why I said "Just for fun!". I definitely don't want the theme to be seen restrictively and hope people don't take my starting the discussion as a desire to limit it.

@pamelaf I thought you were asking a broad question to see if you could push. I was reading the answers as more of a literal way. It is so hard to only talk online and not know if there is a sense of humor or tone of voice being used. I usually go a little off target in my theme photos but then I have yet to make the top five, but I like to use it to push my creative juices a bit.

@pamelaf My wheel theme picture doesn't have a wheel, but where a wheel should be. That's my interpretation of the subject. Whether it's a good picture or not is irrelevant. My point is, go with what you feel. You're free to do what you wish.

@brumbe
Both broad and specific, I guess! i went back to that boat trailer and found even more wheels on it- if you take a wheel as something that moves in a circular way around a point such as an axle. The rope winch has one plain wheel on one side whose purpose is just to retain that one side of the wound rope. Then the other side is a gearwheel with cogs that meets up with a tiny wheel with cogs and turns the cylinder with the rope on it when wound by a lever. Even the tiny gearwheel turns around a shaft!

@xodiac Totally agree that we are enriched when we let our minds explore different interpretations and play!

Yes, communication on the internet definitely has its challenges, doesn't it? Even with emoticons to help us out! :-)

@pamelaf you know me well enough to know that I will always come up with 'one of those' answers. If you look at physics, and the concept of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, wheel), any variation that rests on the original machine is a variation of the simple machine. Therefore, a screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a central shaft. Gears, pulleys, car wheels, rollers on a line shaft conveyer, they are all by definition variations of the simple machine known as the wheel. So yes, all of them are wheels.

Doesn't matter, though, this is about art, not physics.

You probably don't want me to go into complex machines at this point, but I will say I bet my high school physics teacher would be surprised to find out that I was, indeed, listening.

@dmariewms Excellent! Physics was definitely not my best science! So okay, I have a question- is a fan a wheel?
July 29th, 2011
A fan is not a wheel. A fan is a screw. Really. Visualize it from the side. It is an interrupted inclined plane wrapped around a hub. What moves the air is the angled part of the blade.
