question about lenses

July 7th, 2010
I recently bought my first DSLR camera ( a sony alpha a230 ), and am looking to get another lens. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have been looking at a Tamaron 70-300mm- does anyone know this lens or have any experience with it? Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone!

I also just bought my first DSLR and bought the package with a Canon 18-125is lens. Obviously it's not the best lens in terms of zooming capabilities, but the IS portion of it (Image Stabilizer) makes all the difference in the world. While zoomed in to 125mm I can shoot with it in my wobbly hand without any blur. My Dad has a 70?-300 and told me that if he's ever zoomed in all the way that he basically needs a tripod to do it.

So basically, I guess it depends on what you're shooting... If you know you're going to use a tripod for these pictures then go for it, but I love my lens and love being able to just throw it to 125mm and shoot away. Sorry for the long winded - I didn't really answer your question at all - answer. Best of luck!

You choose your lenses based on what things you want to shoot with them, basically. If you want to do cool fish-eye stuff you need a fish eye lens, if you want to do landscapes you want a wide (but not fish-eye wide) lens, if you want to get up close and personal you want a macro jobber, if you want wildlife you need a large zoom.

So step one is deciding what you want to shoot. From your mention of the 70-300 it sounds like you want to do long distance stuff but you also don't sound too sure so I figured I'd start from the bottom :)
