My lovely hubby convinced me before my son was born that we needed a DSLR, best purchase we have ever made! we brought a cannon 50D, we have 2 lenses with it. i want to learn how to use the functions so i dont have to keep using it as a point and shoot.
can someone tell me where to find some good easy info on how to use it.
The main things you should read up on are the ISO, Shutter Speed, and aperture or f/stop. Those are the three major components to taking a photo. After that, all you need to know should be in your manual.
i think a really good way to learn is by clicking on 'more details' on photos on this site that you like the effect of, because often you can see what settings they used to achieve their photo, you can thenuse those settings while practising with your camera. i find it is a great way to learn more about your settings etc.
I have a blog www.learnphotobasics.blogspot.com that covers the basic principles of photography, starting with exposure. i don't update it as much as I should, but it can definitely give you a solid start.
If you just want to learn one particular camera though, it won't help.
VIkdaddy is right. Start with your camera manual. But also Put your camera on manual setting and start playing around with it. At first you are going to get a lot of shots that aren't satisfactory but keep it up and it will get easier for you. Practice, Practice, Practice.
I picked up a book for digital photography written for people who are learning and its easy to understand and fun, it's by Scott Kelby. I recommend his stuff for any help
i have a question. i want to make a post that includes photos, but i dont know how to post them to where the photos (not the URL) show up in the post. any help?
It may sound silly, but I've been reading Nikon D5000 for Dummies. I'm coming from a P&S world into DSLR and this book uses simple language to explain the basics of SLR photography including the more advanced stuff like bracketing, exposure compensation, etc. I've learned a great deal from it. Perhaps they have one for your model camera.
good tips... I've learned by default as well.. just going out and randomly changing settings and doing tripod and motion .. very good way to figure out your settings...
I'm now looking to the canon site.. I have a 5d mark II

Loads of tutorials on there and in my experience, simply googleing what you want to learn will be helpful.
You can also pick up Canon photography books that detail the nitty gritty of specific cameras.
Good luck!
