Pozzo - L'invio di San Francesco Saverio nelle Indie

«Look the other side, Megan, self timer is about to shoot... Bam!»

To celebrate:
- the filling of ALL my calendar gaps, and
- the wonderful time with my 365 friends in the USA,
the first of two more "photobombing the classics", featuring unsuspecting Megan @ludgate and (tomorrow) Louis @pickerandagrinner

Nicely done, as always

what on earth is that one about?
May 5th, 2018
@graemestevens Thank you!
@kali66 haha what do you mean? The photo or the fresco?
May 5th, 2018
@kali66 or the caption?

the fresco
May 5th, 2018
@kali66 It is a fresco in the presbytery of the church of St.Ignatius in Rome. St. Ignatius from Loyola, the founder of the Jesuitic order, welcomed in the order the young Francisco de Jasso Azpiilicueta y Aznares de Javier (those Spaniards...) the offspring of a noble Spanish family, and then sent him to the Indies to spread the Christian Catholic religion in Asia. Francis Xavier is depicted kneeling before Ignatius, kissing the crucifix that radiates the light of the true faith, while the "Indians" wait to be rescued from the dark shadow of ignorance, paganism and despair...

ah i see... and how did that go?
May 5th, 2018
@kali66 hahaha, it seems he was quite effective: left Europe in 1541 traveling from Lisbon to Goa (West India) then to Taiwan, maybe to the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan in 1549... Can't imagine what could it be traveling that far in those years... However, in 1622 Francis Xavier was made saint and in 1927 proclaimed Patron saint of missions (source: Wikipedia, I'm not that expert in saints and, above all, sanctity ;))

Great conclusion, if that's really the end. Fav

megan @ludgate looks so amused with what's going on there. but meg, don't look up, that guy there i'm pretty sure wasn't wearing underwear. :-D

on that bit of history, in early 1500's, magellan's expedition on behalf of the king of spain would prove that the world is round. he discovered the philippines in 1521 and named it so after king philip, his patron, then was promptly killed in a battle with the native chief; his crew sailed back out the other way and ended up in spain proving indeed that the world isn't flat but round. that was the start of the 500 years of spanish colonization of the philippines. st. francis xavier was one of the first catholic missionaries in asia.
