Index Card Junque Journal

Day 98 of 365: Index Card Junque Journal Art

2015 April 8: When I first heard of using index cards as art journals, I was intrigued by the simplicity and the dazzling array of applications of this concept: As an avid birder, I could use index cards to create my own birding field guide from photos that I have taken ...I could also use art journaled index cards to help in Scripture memorization ...to journal my daily "365" photos and narrative ...to make a small, artful book of my favorite recipes ... to help me practice the (free, online) doodling course that I am taking ...The possibilities and applications are endless!

There is such a nice variety of index cards now: They come in several sizes and colors, they come single or spiral-bound, and there are nice binders for most sizes. I decided to start with some 5"x8" index cards that I could punch holes in and put in a 7"x9" binder made for half-sheets of paper.

I am enjoying this art form so much that I intend to try a good variety of sizes and bindings, but this is a photo that I took today of my first attempt:
Love it! What a great idea. When I retire I really want to get into bird watching. So much to learn and experience.

What a great idea! Will have to give it a try. My daughter-in-law scrapbooks but I just couldn't get into it. I think a 5 x 8 might be just the size I could handle. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, @John and @Ann T.! The 5x8 cards are a nice size to enjoy doing without a large time investment.

John, you are wise to be planning ahead ...I became semi-retired several years ago when, after I had spent 9 years being a homeschool teacher, all of my sons one-by-one graduated high school and went to college. When I no longer had to plan lessons, grade papers, take them on field trips, drive them to music lessons and sporting events, cook their "school" lunches, etc. -- I was at a loss as to how to fill my days; I had to stop and remember what I did before I had children. Now my oldest is about the receive his PhD, my middle son is about to finish his second college degree, and my youngest is about to graduate college-- and I am having the time of my life enjoying gardening, bird watching, taking photographs, and doing art projects. Hobbies are great, and I highly recommend bird watching!

What kind of printer do you have that will print your photos on these 5 x 8 index cards? I love the idea of doing this and it's also a great way to see your own photos and how you improve over time!! You could even make calendars on binders!! FAV!

I like the calendar idea, @Kathy! My printer is an Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4630. I like it because it prints double-sided, so I don't have to flip the paper over. It prints index cards, envelopes ...pretty much any size project that I want.
