Consuming

2016.11.09 Wednesday: After voting yesterday, I told myself that I was going to stay off all social media, and avoid any news stations for at least the rest of the day.

I like to know the end before the beginning: I am the type of person who reads the last page of a book before I start (to see if I like the ending enough to read the whole story); while we watch reality shows I sneak off to twitter or to the internet to see who is voted off before it happens. I don't like to get emotionally invested in a character that isn't going to last long in a story (a major reason that I did not watch "Game of Thrones"!).

Anyway, my resolve did not last long. Shortly after arriving back home, I kept finding myself on facebook and twitter to see what my friends had to say about the election. Then, as soon as polls began closing across the country, I noticed my sons checking the results ...and decided to do so myself. Of course, I googled it.

It became compulsive; I was unable to glance away from my phone as Google updated their results every 30 seconds. I ended up staying up well after my bedtime -- We watched results come in until after 1:00 a.m. this morning.

Finally, when no updates had been released for over half an hour, I was so exhausted that I dragged myself upstairs and fell sound asleep. When I awoke this morning, I found that my sons had taped Donald Trump's acceptance speech (at 3:00 a.m. our time!) so I could watch it and see this history in the making.

The results were: Donald John Trump, Sr. is our President-elect; Republicans will have a majority in both the House and the Senate; and all of the amendments to our state constitution on which we voted passed.
I made it until 2am. I wanted to see them call Pennsylvania for Trump but they just wouldn't do it. The New York Times had a running tally on their website ( which I watched on the iPad ) showing the state was leaning toward trump. They gave Pa. to Trump when I went to bed but Fox wouldn't do it.

I am happy with the outcome for the nation and our state. Happier still that now I can watch TV and listen to the radio without any political ads.

@pej I also was waiting for PA to be called for Trump ...hoping that I would see him reach 270 before I fell asleep. I realize that a lot of people disagree, but for the first time in years I feel hopeful about the direction our country is taking.
