2017.04.18 Tuesday: At sunset today I dashed outside for some quick photos, and happened to decide to take a few from our porch. As I ran onto the porch to capture the gorgeous colors of the sky while the sun was quickly sinking below the horizon, I glanced down and was quite dismayed to see that this turtle was upside-down on our steps.
He evidently had tried to climb the steps and found them too steep -- and had flipped over in the process.
Not knowing much about turtles, all I could think was that this might be a snapping turtle ...so I called for my sons and husband to come help. They gently turned him over with a long stick; the turtle immediately retreated inside his shell.
We later checked on him and found that he had evidently walked off -- We could not find him anywhere in our yard. I hope that he finds the pond in our back yard if he decides to stay!
You were in the right place at the right time! What a neat experience, and your pictures make a beautiful collage. Hopefully, you'll see this handsome turtle again at your pond!
Glad you saved him as I think he's a Painted Turtle- a good one! My husband is better at identifying turtles, but I'm pretty sure I've got that right. Snappers have a spiny shell and their snouts are more pointed. They are one color as well- at least the ones I've seen- sort of a dull olive-brown-green if memory serves me correctly. And even upside-down a snapper would have done just that- snapped at you.
@olivetreeann Thanks for the enlightenment! I very rarely see a turtle, so I've never researched them. I like the name Painted Turtle -- and I "googled" them and found that they are cool creatures :) !
