A photo of the old engine houses at the Crown Mines, at the base of the cliffs just north of Botallack, is 'the classic Cornwall shot".
The former tin mine extends for about 400 metres out under the Atlantic ocean and the deepest shaft is 250 fathoms (about 500m) below sea level.
I learned that I was already familiar with this area without realising it, as it was used as a filming location for the TV series "Poldark" which I just adored. Melissa is very lucky she didn't end up being named Demelza!
